The only prohibition is on serving in Congress and another branch. There's no prohibition on serving in both the judicial and executive branches at the same time.

John Marshall was both Chief Justice and Secretary of State for a month.

But, I doubt Garland would do that because he has a sense of ethics.

The Senate is far too important to even risk a temporary of the majority.

Alabama's (R) governor would certainly pick someone from her own party.

Maybe in two years if we have a safe senate majority we can think about it. But unless a Senator is from a true n;ue state with a Dem Goevrnor it isn't worth the risk.

unfortunately, he has no chance in my view.

The AG absolutely needs the appearance of independence (and forget Trumps Justice Dept, it wasn't), so no matter how highly qualified he is, the appearance of independence is totally lost.

37. Nominating Doug Jones
Tue Dec 8, 2020, 03:14 PM
Dec 2020

isn't about this need everyone is talking about the go after Trump. That's probably not going to happen regardless because of the massive number of pardons coming down the line. Those cases are going to need to be handled in other ways such as at the state level or simply by declassifying documents to shed light on things that went on and through public congressional hearings. We might not be able to prosecute, but we can have a public trial in the media and let every person in the country be their own jury.

Nominating Doug Jones shows a commitment to taking on systemic racism across the country. Jones won his Senate seat because of historical black support in Alabama because of his willingness to bring klansmen to trial and get justice for things that happened years ago. It would have been very easy for him to say those things were in the past, but he didn't. He's not only willing to have these fights, he's looking to have them.

Trump will likely issue dozens of pardons and will leave office with a pardon himself, one way or another. Whatever prosecution he might face will almost certainly be limited to the state level. It’s unlikely Jones would ever have a significant role as AG in prosecuting Trump, or Jared, Ivanka, Barr or the rest of the lot.

And if by some miracle there were federal crimes Trump would be charged with it’s possible Yates, who was fired by Trump, would have to recuse herself anyway if she were AG.

She would also have some difficulty getting confirmed, though I suspect it’s possible the could go the “acting” route.

69. How Doug Jones Brought KKK Church Bombers to Justice
Tue Dec 8, 2020, 10:10 PM
Dec 2020
Snip~

Much of the media attention on Jones, the first Democrat elected in the state in a quarter century, focused on his role in prosecuting Ku Klux Klan members who had planted a bomb that killed four girls at a black church.

The terrorist attack occurred on September 15, 1963, when a bomb went off at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. The church was a known meeting place for Civil Rights organizers, and was targeted for that reason. The bomb injured at least 20 people and killed four young girls: Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Carol Denise McNair.

Doug Jones lost to an ignorant, racist, dumb as a Box of Hair, opportunist in Tuberville. I asked many of my fellow Tide fans how they could vote for him. They said they puked and did it but they believed his ads about abortion rights which is really contentious here in Alabama. They actually believe "Lib Tards" will terminate life after birth when the baby is viable. It was sickening especially after all the good work Jones did and Tuberville just rode Trumps coat tails. And guess what he lost, Tommy you Auburn loser asshole.
