27. scotus knows that if they don't dismiss this they will be flooded with cases from states trying

to overturn other states laws, rulings. Say, CA demanding TX pollution laws be stricter, multiply that by thousands of cases and that is a can of worms scotus wants nothing of.

3. There will be no ruling today.

SCOTUS gave the states until 3PM today to file their responses. So, even a cursory read-through and discussion means there will be no ruling before end of day tomorrow, if not next Monday or even later.

as of this time.

You can expect a denial tomorrow. The Justices will read the responses, discuss tomorrow, and a ruling will issue.

I see no way Texas prevails in this. It is way too simple and just to deny Texas.

It was so much fun.
I have so many great memories from Denver.

Watching the storm clouds roll down across the Mountains above us. The downtown park watching Bill Clinton speak at a campaign rally. The Zoo, camping, friendly everybody, Football at Mile High, concerts at Red Rocks....aaaaghh. i loved it.

We lived on North Holly & Alameda by the big gold domed Jewish Temple. We were a close drive to everything fun.

Good years, they were ~

22. The election of 1860 was extraordinarily contentious

Abraham Lincoln won primarily because the Democratic party of the time was largely split between northern and southern factions.

The Southern Democrats did not recognize Lincoln as being the legitimate President, which was largely a pretext - they had been spoiling for a fight, despite Buchanan's attempt at playing peacemaker, and shortly after Lincoln's inauguration, they began seceding, one by one.

My suspicion is that this is Trump's true Hail Mary. He does not expect that the Supreme Court is going to rule in Texas's favor. Rather, he is pushing to get the red states to form their own country and declare Trump President for Life. Now, I don't believe for a moment that any Red state would actually do either of those things, but in Trump's mind it must seem viable. I'd guess that this is the kind of scheme hatched by either Stephen Miller or Steve Bannon: get those Confederate Good Ole Boys riled up and they'd be there right behind Trump, refighting the Civil War.

January is going to be ... interesting.

33. The 17 states need to be punished for this act of sedition

They might as well be filing secession documents. The federal government should levy disincentives to future acts in this vein. I realize it hurts the Democratic voters living in red states, or in those 17 states in particular, but we cannot govern in an equitable manner if a third of our states wish to subvert the will of the people.

44. what I don't really get...

16 states have sided with Texas.

Four states are defendants.

20 states are part of an amicus brief opposing Texas.

That's 24 states whose leaders accept reality and 17 that do not.

What the hell is going on in the remaining 13 states?

I can kinda see why the 17 states who want the election reversed are acting as they are. They're led by people whose heads are so far up Trump's ass, it gets bright for them when Trump yawns. They're behaving idiotically, but their action can be understood in the context of current levels of American idiocy.

There is no excuse for a state to take no action and remain on the sidelines. I'm usually not a "if you're not with us, you're against us" kinda guy, but in this case, I am. There's no shade of gray here - either you're an idiot, or you want the idiots to be quiet and let grownups handle things.

Yesterday, I felt a modest amount of pride that my home state didn't join Texas. But I then realized what that told me of how far the country has fallen. I used to take pride when my state or community did something good. Now, it's enough that my state didn't do something really stupid.

But now, I'm a bit more dejected. My state is one of the 13 who've decided to remain silent.

Those of us in these states have to get our asses in gear and contact our elected representatives. It is not OK when they remain silent in the face of an attempted coup. I don't care how ham-handed and doomed to failure this attempt is. I don't even care if they're Republicans and don't want to piss off Trump's base. There's right, and there's wrong. There's no in-between, and the current effort to usurp authority from the voters must be stopped.

That means the dead-enders who really want to push this have to see just how many more of us there are. They live in a bubble, and it's got to be popped.

49. What the hell would have changed since the last failure at SCOTUS?

I can see the court principals each reading Texas' submission, on the off chance that the fraudster and his cronies pulled a rabbit out of a hat and actually found a new and legally sound avenue of law on which to proceed.

Unlikely, I know, but that's what's needed by Texas, and the WH.

Failing that, each justice can pick up the response from PA, et al, heft it on an upturned palm and declare "This has to weigh close to a pound. Good enough for me."

*bang* Case dismissed without hearing.
