(34,133 posts)But the Republicans have been blocking it by suddenly caring about the debt that returning citizens had imposed on them. When funds were raised to help pay those fees, the state could not give accurate numbers very quickly. Many returning citizens who had registered to vote were blocked because of monies they had never been told were owed up to that point.

(22,093 posts)etc., and then be blocked in voting. Sounds wrong to me and if they can't prove what these people owe, then blocking them from voting sounds wrong, they can't prove that they own anything (in fees, etc.)...

(34,133 posts)I don't know how many people were blocked from voting, but I bet it was enough to have turned the election.
Here is some news about the results:
November 9, 2020
In November of 2018, approximately 64% of Floridians voted in favor of Florida Amendment 4, a constitutional amendment meant to ensure voting rights for former felons.
After the decision, Governor Ron DeSantis, R-FL., decided that the amendment needed the Florida State Legislature to pass legislation for it to take effect.
This led to Florida Senate Bill 7066, which had the main elements of Amendment 4 but also required those convicted of a felony to complete all terms of sentencing, including complete payment of any fines or fees from the conviction before they earn back their right to vote.
Signed in 2019 by DeSantis, the requirement in the bill left up to 900,000 former felons unable to vote in the 2020 presidential election.

TALLAHASSEE, FL Voting-rights advocates say theyre working to keep the momentum going, registering Floridians with felony convictions so they can vote in future elections. Conflicting court rulings and confusing records were just a few hurdles they faced on Election Day, as Republican lawmakers sought to restrict the return of 1.4 million former felons by requiring they pay all fines and fees before they could vote.
Some local elections officials, including in Broward County, said they had to rely on an honor system that anyone restored to vote was eligible. Despite the confusion, Neil Volz deputy director of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition said his group is proud of the outcome.
We think returning citizens were an undeniable winner in this years election, said Volz, as over 50,000 people who were unable to vote because of a past felony conviction just two years ago were able to experience democracy in this years election./blockquote]
Volz said the State of Florida is simply unprepared to carry out its own restrictions. He added that the requirement to pay fines and fees doesnt apply to all returning citizens, because some couldve received a sentence modification by a judge, or might have been granted voting rights through the Clemency Process, which doesnt require they be paid in full.

(22,093 posts)here, but still...the floridarrc org sounds like a winner, I'll make my FL friends aware of this org. (like so many of us in the rest of the US, we all have friends and family all throughout the state of FL, and I'm still amazed at this treatment of felons and their voting rights/fees. It just seems ... un-American...

(34,133 posts)They will continue their work so more people are able to vote in the future.
I asked my Florida Senator to introduce a bill requiring that upon release every felon should get a statement from the system on exactly how much they owe. The Department of Corrections should be able to do that just like when you check out of a hotel, they give you an invoice.
I think if a person who had been incarcerated does not receive a statement within a certain period after their release, they should not be responsible for any charges. The state should bear responsibility for making the debts known so they can be cleared in a reasonable amount of time or the state gives up all claim to it and it is expunged from the released person's records.

(22,093 posts)of what they owe, then they should be free and clear of all obligations. This is a good start, and I hope that they do this. They say that once a person has served their time, then they should be free and clear of their debt to society, and with this issue hanging over their heads, it does seem unfair. I hope that they don't come up w/ totally unreasonable fees/costs either, e.g., hundreds of thousands of dollars, these people will never see the light of day literally. Take care and thanks for the very informative posts.

What a choice: slime ball Roger Stone or the hollow, robotic Ivanka?
Stay strong Florida!
PS: I do appreciate Stone's knock against Rick Scott. The GOP's eating its own in action. Does my heart good.
