If so, how many? Where or how did you meet? Did you know each other BEFORE you joined DU? Or did you meet in real life because of DU?

(69,017 posts)Knew more back in the day, but some bailed from DU, and a couple passed away.
So, probably knew more than 10, but it's now 4 or 5.
We had a few get-togethers years ago, then a few who had musical backgrounds got together several more times.
Another long timer, lived in a small town directly east of me. (Around 25 miles)
We had breakfast at a diner where he lived a few times, and he came down to counter protest some idiot Nazis who stupidly thought this was a sympathetic town.
He died a few years ago. I think I last saw him around 18 months before he died.
Pretty sure it's 4 no longer on DU & 2 deceased.
There are 5 still here, pretty sure.

I was introduced to DU by a personal friend. In the intervening years she moved away, and also stopped posting at DU. I think she just has other things to occupy her mind.

(25,816 posts)We met on DU and shared a common love of blues music. We had good time playing guitar together
and have remained friends. We talk and text often. Brothers from different mothers.

(10,391 posts)For the DC Iraq war protest. Can't remember his name tbh. I can see his face though.

(25,586 posts)I met them before DU existed at a gaming convention and never mentioned that we had met as that persons online demeanor was that of the ultimate know-it-all, even when demonstrably wrong. Eventually that user flamed out in spectacular fashion and hasnt been seen since.

(56,135 posts)I met Hissyspit at the Denver convention in 2008, havent seen him on the board for a while. Steve2470 has stayed with me and Mrs. DFW here in Düsseldorf, as have California Peggy and Lionel Mandrake. The four of us have met up in California as well, and Peggys and my schedules once coincided enough to let us have lunch together in Paris.

(54,720 posts)I don't think any of them, but one, posts here anymore. I met three when living in NOLA, and one I knew in grad school, and through a post of his here, I recognized some personal information, and PM'ed him...lo and behold, it was my friend!

So many really hilarious, witty, intelligent folks have moved on from DU. It's too bad they felt either the place had moved away from them or they needed to move away from it.
Me? I'm none of the above, so I still hang about.

We also live within 5 miles of two that used to be super active on DU.
Went to the march in DC years ago and met a ton of them, including the admin.

Once covid settles down, hoping to organize some in my new western NC location. Met some great folks at our Raleigh area events.

(4,501 posts)However, I remember you posted you wanted to retire on the GC. Its a big area. I live in NWFL, would love to meet others in the area. This part of FL is greatly misunderstood. Yes, its extremely crazy red. But its the sugar white beaches, emerald waters, native oaks, and most importantly salty sea breezes are hard to pass up, particularly if youre a native like me.

(11,949 posts)But own a lot in an old historic town in the eastern panhandle we have been spending time in for over 25 years. Plan on building and retiring there. In the next 5-8 years. Least developed beach island in Florida across the bay. Great fishing. Eclectic community.
Not a Florida native but of Louisiana. I like Floridas cooler summers! Louisiana in summer has to be experienced, cant be explained. As humid as Florida but 100 degrees. Especially near a cane or corn field. Never felt that hot in Florida.
As you know, near the coast the sea breeze is nice even in summer.
Have a great evening.

Would love to actually meet a few in person, though.
