Never in my lifetime did I think a sitting President would seriously discuss a military coup...

https://www.axios.com/trump-officials-alarmed-overturn-election-results-a844d1d2-acb2-47a9-87ce-ac579458b1ea.html

The big picture: Their fears include Trump's interest in former national security adviser Michael Flynn's wild talk of martial law

SNIP

A senior administration official said that when Trump is "retweeting threats of putting politicians in jail, and spends his time talking to conspiracy nuts who openly say declaring martial law is no big deal, it’s impossible not to start getting anxious about how this ends."

Yes, granted, I do not think this article or anything in the NY Times or Washington Post specifically says "military coup" but that's what all this adds up to. Using the military to obtain purely political objectives, such as staying in office. Banana republic type stuff.

ETA: Yes, I know the top brass of the military has stated several times they will not cooperate with any such nonsense. I am not worried about that, at all. My concern is that a President is even being ALLOWED to discuss it, without being removed posthaste. He should have been removed, legally, by now.

Will any Republican advocate the 25th Amendment, tell him to resign NOW, or tell him to cut the shit ? Nope. If Romney does, I'd be surprised, but on the national level he's probably the most likely to tell him to resign publicly. A trip with a few Republican Senators to the White House a la 1974 Goldwater to tell him to resign ? Not happening.

We have some very serious work ahead. The country has very serious work ahead, to reinforce our democratic ideals, principles and norms.

the military has enlisted some of that demographic likewise

Trump has recently put some controversial people in roles in the Pentagon, and while I am not prone to conspiracy speculation, there are enough things and words that have been done that have me very concerned, and I will remain so until after inuaguration

They have discussed it and executed it for other democracies for well over a century on behalf of the same oligarchs who have way too much power today.
What needs to be answered is what is the meaning of national interest? Whose interests?
Until that is resolved we are all in danger

They are not going to participate in any coup that would give him more power. They can't wait to see the end of him. If they loved him it would be a different story. But no, this isn't going to happen, thank God.

to avoid the consequences of being out of office, he will try anything. Doesn't mean he will succeed, but I think he might actually try to call a national emergency, claiming that Biden is carrying out a socialist takeover of the US.

Sat Dec 19, 2020, 07:08 PM
Dec 2020

Gerald Gardner once portrayed Nixon discussing something with some US military high-up with the caption, "but we can't bomb Washington." It was meant as a joke at the time.

Only the fact that far right Republicans in 1974 made it clear that they would vote for removal from office, if an impeachment vote got as far as the Senate, finally convinced Nixon to resign. It helped, after Agnew's departure, that Nixon had selected the moderate, and well-respected Gerry Ford as VP, so that everyone was relieved to see Nixon go.

Everyone knows that Pence is almost as much of a nut case as Trump, so the mere action of abandoning the presidency wouldn't reassure anyone. Besides, these days, a Republican president could dump a planeload of anthrax on Boston, and a majority of Republican Senators would cheer and justify it as necessary collateral damage on the Senate floor.

It has been a latent malignancy in the Republican Party since McCarthy, and now the simmering infection has once again erupted in full force.

I think he knows something huge is coming legally from NY state. If not, he would be content to just say the election was rigged, then go golf, grift, and back to his life before he was elected. He is utterly desperate to hold on to power so there must be more to it.

and moving said company to another part of the world to make better profits.

The U.S. has never worried itself about over throwing other governments (never mind who was in charge in the US.). Why should it worry itself about overthrowing itself. Just part of the global scheme of things, whatever turns a larger profit for its share holders (Which is usually the executives).

this orange mindless thing in the WH moves the line farther away from what was acceptable from the day before. God only knows how far he may push it by Jan. 20th. I worry about his cult like followers after this is all over. A huge chunk of my family believes every single lie he spews. I always generally disliked him when I was growing up and now I'm 52 and despise him for the pain and sorrow he's inflicted on our country and its great people.
