Why do some folks get so aggravated by it when they haven't protested being required to wear shoes and a shirt?

39. Actually "No Shoes No Service" signs are rooted in racism and discrimination

Many of these signs were a way to deny entry to black people who in many areas of the country, especially right after Great Depression, could not always afford shoes. Where I grew up it was common for young black children to not have shoes because their parents often could not afford them. Many public places, especially restaurants and convenience stores, would often use "No shoes No service" signs as a way to keep black people out of their businesses.

I of course have no problem with a sign that says "No mask No service" as long as they enforce the policy equally. I have seen too many businesses that have similar policies who make people of color wear a mask, but I will see "usually an older white person" not wearing a mask and nobody says anything to them.

57. interesting

that's a different take than I have/had. I had the impression that most of the signs I ran across were aimed at gross (and offensive) attire. There's always been that clueless (and heedless) 55 year old that thought his speedo was just fine. (while 99% of the remaining population thought he was a gross abomination)

As for a racial disparity in requiring masks -- nah. (but then we all don't live in the same neck of the woods) For my part -- I wish the employees were being much more stringent in requiring compliance (old and young) -- with the support and backing of their management. In far too many instances they are being actively told to "not make a fuss", "don't escalate." A shame -- but that's modern retail for you.

7. I haven't experienced anti-masking as a problem here

Yes, there are signs, but neither I nor my spouse have encountered any maskless persons trying to enter a store over the past 9 months. Not that we go out that much ... just to a grocery every 10 days or so, or once every few months to Costco. But even doing curbside pickups, while waiting in the car I've noticed total compliance from customers who are entering a store. They take them out and put them on before entering.

Is it just where I am?

The only time I see maskless people is outsideófor example, people out walking a dog or just taking a stroll. And that's only occasional people. Most pedestrians I encounter in the city are masked.

10. It's definitely where you are.

In my neck of the woods whenever I go shopping in Walmart I see two out of every 10 people wearing a mask maybe. And in my business where I'm working Mass I haven't required because it's not a state requirement so most of our customers don't wear one.

17. I See It Occasionally Here

Supermarket, very rarely. Pharmacy, never. Liquor store? 30% of customers.
Gas stations are probably the same.
But, just seeing people in and out of salons & open restaurants, I see almost nobody unmasked.
So, a mixed bag.

25. You aren't seeing what people do

inside the store.

They pull the mask down to their chin or neck.

They uncover their nose and wear it only on the mouth, which is useless.

They hover too close to people in the aisles or at the checkout line.

Employees as well as customers do these things. At the 7/11 near me, ALL the employees cover only their mouths, leaving their noses hanging out. Customers buy drinks to go and slices of pizza and walk around the
store with their masks at their necks while they eat and drink in the aisles and in the checkout line. The employees never tell them not to do it. But there is a sign on the door saying that masks are required. I have not been in there in ages after seeing that.

34. I wouldn't walk into a 7-11

Every employee at the groceries here keep their masks properly positioned. Sure, I might not see everything, but in general, everything I have seen makes me proud about the compliance.
Iím not trying to be elitist here; itís just that I see people complying quite well in my city. Of course, itís a very blue area, so that might be the reason.

50. The grocery store I go to is very

good about masks and distancing, too. There is a sign at the entrance. The cashiers nearest the door watch people coming in and stop them if they don't have a mask. If they say they "forgot" it, the employees hand them a disposable surgical mask and watch to be sure they put it on. If they refuse, they are told to leave. The manager's office has a window to the store. If he sees or hears a problem, he goes out to back the employees. If somebody removes their mask or pulls it down, they are told to put it back on or leave.

It's the only store where I feel reasonably comfortable about going inside.

40. I travelled from Florida to California and back.

Stopped multiple times in each state, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, etc. to enter public buildings and rarely, if ever, saw anyone inside without a mask and almost all establishments had signs saying none were allowed in without one. Many had a door buzzard type posted at the entrance to enforce it too.

49. My experience in rural GA and FL also suggests a lot of complaints are overstated.

A majority on average have been wearing masks here for some time, most just know they aren't buying groceries without them, but going without does become more common in smaller, nonchain stores that don't specifically require them.

The only places we've seen without masks for a very long time were outstanding examples. A couple of upscale coastal vacation/retirement communities. The only people we saw wearing masks were some unfortunate service workers who had no choice but let customers spread disease at will. I presumed pretty solidly conservative overall, though the Trump boat parade going on at one didn't seem to spark any special enthusiasm in those strolling around.

43. It seems to vary widely by where you are

Here around Boston, it's nearly 100% compliance. The only people I see in the city without masks are pretty much homeless people. Even a-holes who don't want to wear a mask would face enormous social pressure and be called out by the other customers before a store had to stop them.

51. No, you're right, my experiences are totally anecdotal.

But it occurs to me that an establishment might be held legally accountable were it's employees or even some customers to come down with COVID if it did not have a policy, clearly stated like on the entrance door, that no one would be allowed in maskless.

It might be total BS and not enforced even, but if they did not at least appear to take every reasonable precaution to protect those within its walls, a jury might find for a plaintiff and award them some ungawdly sum of money...

Say, that gives me an idea...

11. I have begun to get crass with people partially wearing a mask...

You know the kind, the ones with the mask covering part of their mouth and none of their nose?

I have started asking them to hold something for me - a piece of fruit, a package, anything in arms reach will do...and thenI inform them that I am opposed to the store's policy regarding the wearing of pants and my penis is feeling unnecessarily confined...

Most of them don't get the analogy, but every once in a blue moon a flicker of understanding is briefly there...and that is enough for now. These idiots are unreachable through browbeating or by antagonism or even via education...but make them momentarily FEEL their own stupidity, make them confront it later, when the lights are off and they realize that being an asshole is not a prerequisite for being a patriotic American...then they understand. Then they know and feel shame. They may NEVER change, they WILL NEVER admit it...but its there, its a look in their eye that once spotted it more delicious than Trump tears served with Waygu beef burgers!

I work in a grocery store, and literally every day, sometimes more than once, someone will come up to the counter wearing a mask, then pull it down and lean in to talk to me. Being a clerk, I'm not allowed to say, "Hey! Put that back on, idiot!" The best I can do is to look slightly alarmed, and take a step back. No one ever notices. Until yesterday! The man saw my face, had the decency to look chagrined, and put his mask back on! It was a miracle. I'm still stoked more than 24 hours later.

16. U.S. deaths (overall, from all causes) increase 15% over last year

U.S. deaths in 2020 top 3 million, by far most ever counted, an increase of 15% over last year -- the largest single year percentage increase since 1918. In contrast, in 2019, the mortality rate fell a little bit, and consequently life expectancy rose for the 3rd straight year, to 78.8 years. This year, life expectancy may end up dropping as much as 3 full years. Deaths usually rise by about 20,000 to 50,000 each year due to population aging and growth. This year deaths are on track to be at least 400,000 more than 2019, AP, 12/22/20

Details: https://www.mprnews.org/story/2020/12/22/us-deaths-in-2020-top-3-million-by-far-most-ever-counted

In case some fuckhead tells you they count every death where someone tested positive or had symptoms as a Covid death, thus greatly exagerrating the Covid death count -- in essence by counting people who died WITH Covid as having died FROM covid. Well, Rightie McRightRight, something's killing a lot of people this year. The Squad? Black Lives Matter? George Soros? Hillary's Pizza Place Pedophiles?

In my county mostly everyone is wearing a mask. I stupidly left my mask at home so I covered my face with a paper towel. A woman came out and saw me and she gave me an unused mask. In this red state I'm impressed with how most are wearing a masks, blacks, Mexicans, Harley riders, all across the spectrum of our diverse population. In fact out of the tri-county area our county has the lowest cases of covid at 34 new positives. My take? I believe the virus is everywhere therefore I don't leave home without a mask and sanitizer.

Masking is mandatory in Pennsylvania, but compliance sucks out here in Stupidville.

So just yesterday I noticed:

A friend showing off her ďI canít wear a mask because I have asthma ď button on Instagram.

Another friend who works in a food establishment reported that a customer came in without a mask with the excuse that he wasnít feeling well (!!!).

The receptionist at my doctorís office is back at work after being out with covid. She caught it from her husband who went to a gym where people didnít mask.

55. That sign, and pepper spray, ought to work.

I live in Democratic California where mask compliance is near 100%.

Even at WalMart they won't let people in without a mask and they will treat people who remove their masks once inside like shoplifters.

According to friends and relatives living in Republican California mask mandates have been largely ignored until recently.

As is typical for the FreeDumb crowd shit only gets real when it happens to them -- when their preacher is dead and mom and dad are in the ICU. It's getting real for them.

And even then, some of them still call it a hoax.

Hell, my wife is treating covid patients who still think the virus is a hoax, even as she is trying to find a hospital that will take them.

My own ethical foundations might not be as strong as my wife's. I'd be tempted to let the deniers die.
