Why did Trump all of a sudden change his mind about the $2000 payment?

As usual, it had to be about him.

Did he see that he was losing some support amongst the poor working class?

He has had Mnuchin working for him for months to get thru the election and keep the economy from crashing. He had stood on the sideline the entire time. He never got involved. But, it is a little much to think he did not know what Mnuchin was doing?

So now, he is putting pressure on McConnell and the Republicans to give everyone the $2000 dollar survival payment. He now says the $600 dollars negotiated is a disgrace.

So, why did he change his mind? Does he want to solidify his support among his poorest supporters or does he want to divide the Republicans, by threatening their re-election chances, in an attempt to bribe them into supporting his coup to overthrow an election?

Who knows?

1. Games

He doesn't give a rat's ass about the American people, and neither does McConnell.

2. He sucks as a negotiator, so he sat back and let others do the work. Then, he just had to...

stick his nose into it. Deep into it, so it would look like he was doing something.

Thar's the way he's always operated.

5. Rewrite the Bill...

to include Section 230 repeal, start voter fraud commission.

What would the loss of Sec 230 have on DU?

8. It wasn't "sudden" in that he first demanded a larger stimulus in July.

The repubs originally proposed $1200/person and, at that time (July) Trump criticized it as too little. He repeated his preference for a larger stimulus amount in September and October. Obviously, these demands were targeted towards the election. After the election, he mostly shut up about it until after the compromise $600 stimulus was agreed to.

9. His known propensity for having the opinion of whoever he talked to last, if they flatter him

Lindsay came in to sweet talk him over a game of golf. Mnuchin also probably chimed in.

They probably suggested the red sharpie thing, to make a statement with a legally-meaningless faux line item veto while not taking the blame for the stimulus failing.

11. trumps trying to play both sides now with this direct money,

He switched positions to make McConnell look like the bad guy and not himself, and to steal the credit away from Democrats and Biden, while having Mitch add things to the bill he knows Democrats will never accept. Then he and Mitch will claim its the Democrats fault, not theirs. Then trump will brag over and over again he wanted it, knowing he's lying. Just another fraud being played on people by trump.

13. He wants to be front and center on everyone's screen to push the coup attempt

For that, he needs to make a lot of waves. If he just played golf and sat in his room at marilago he'd drop off the edge of people's attention spans. He needs to stay hot and trending to keep the (MAGA folk) heat on the people he wants to support the coup.
