Would object to some of the states Trump won i.e Texas, Florida, Ohio etc.... on the grounds of voter suppression....For one, voter suppression is actually real...For two, it will show GOP hypocrisy and three it will take away some of the shine that these GOP Senators and Congressmen think that they are getting for objecting on the states that they will object to....man we never seem to be able to go tit for tat with the other side and sometimes you have to
Edit - and four, it would drive Trump mad

(25,241 posts)He knows the Repugs would be in trouble if the Dems made challenges to any of the Red State votes.
These 10 or so Senators that will challenge things on the 6th might be intimidated and back down if the Dems welcome their challenge and include the Red States.
I say 'go for it'.

(17,375 posts)And the story would just turn into both sides objecting.
Nope, keep the spotlight on their looniness and contempt for democracy.

(9,313 posts)I wish we had been less focused on defending the presidential election as some sort of example of perfection, and more focused on the voter suppression and corruption that resulted in elections that UNDERCOUNTED Biden's support.
I would LOVE to have seen investigations and reports like Conyer's What Went Wrong in Ohio. We need to be FAR more proactive in creating well documented records of suppression that could be grounds for LEGITIMATE objections, like Stephanie Tubbs Jones (RIP) and Barbara Boxer's on Jan 6, 2005.
As far as I'm concerned, we shot ourselves in the foot by failing to counter every right-wingnut claim of "fraud" with REAL examples of unlawfully purging qualified voters from the roles, under allocating resources to create intolerable long lines in urban and AA areas, and other tactics that denied far too many citizens the right to vote.
They will use their claims of massive fraud as grounds for more, and more effective, suppression tactics. We utterly failed to lay the groundwork for mounting a national battle against voter suppression.
As I posted in another thread:
The right to vote means the right to EASILY cast our ballots and have confidence our votes will be correctly counted.
The enemies of free and fair elections are well organized and powerful. We need a massive counter effort. Effective national media and fundraising. On the ground efforts in legislatures. Campaigns to expand universal mail in voting WITHOUT vote suppressing, and utterly unnecessary requirements like witnesses.
Each of us can help by pushing our leaders to act and pushing the organizations we belong to to make battling voter suppression a top priority! We can write letters to the editor condemning voter registration purges and any other tactics at work in our own states. We can awaken patriotic passion for defending our most basic right.

(31,893 posts)First of all, why muddy the event by tossing more shit into the mix?
Our best bet is to leave this solely to the repugs and let them make asses of themselves in clear view of the country.
As another poster pointed out in this thread, adding Dem objections to the event just feeds the "both sides" narrative - something that would be absolutely counter-productive.
Far more effective would be to allow the Civil Rights division of the Biden Justice Department take on the issue of voter suppression. Congress itself could also mount their own investigations that can proceed carefully over time, instead of a rushed one-day show.
Congress can also explore what may be possible in crafting legislation to improve election processes and systems throughout the country.
Let the repugs have their dog-and-pony show on January 6. Then the Dems can get to work in a serious and sober manner going forward.

(4,167 posts)And Dems have tried to differentiate from Republicans for decades while Republicans have had a we dont give a fuck attitude for years and have been rewarded for it

(48,988 posts)They are polarizing their own party with this nonsense. It is going to split into the Make tRump Happy Again party and the Greed Over People party.
Whether the tRumpanzees leave the Republicans or the saner Republicons leave the smoking ruins of the party that tRump takes over is not yet clear, but I think it will be the former.

(43,123 posts)Courts leave it to the states for the most part. The intent here is to tie up the process and leave Trump in office.
GOP are fighting so hard --- they must have a hellish agenda for us, and they know they don't stand a good chance of EVER getting to this point again.

(22,250 posts)No way that Texas will be flipped no matter how many investigations. A couple of tight counties might be flipped by a slim margin but Our entire ballot remained essentially static across the state.
Maybe one or two State House of Rep races might flip but it is doubtful

(25,456 posts)No. We should address the issues within the framework of rationality and common sense. The way to address those issues isn't to make irrelevant assertions in the same manner that the GOP does.
"we never seem to be able to go tit for tat with the other side "
The other side looks like irrational jackasses. We shouldn't look to them for guidance.

(4,167 posts)And these Republican Senators arent the Senators of the 80s when they were more distinguished and bipartisan....yeah you would have a few right wing crazies, but they were drowned out by the others who respected the Senate and its prestige...these Senators have watered down the institution and its now just a glorified House of Representatives

(1,303 posts)Shout down the bastards, call them traitors to their faces. They deserve no comity, no respect for the traditions of the august institution. They deserve a taste of their own medicine. Its not stooping to their level, its standing up for whats right.
Lets suppose Biden is inaugurated (not a given, even at this late date). Biden will have four tough years, years in which the great right wing echo machine will promote more seditionist ideas. Hell be thwarted to the fullest extent of Republicans abilities, which will remain substantial. Attacks on him and all Democrats will escalate.
In four years theyll be back with a vengeance, with a better candidate, more money, and more desire for vengeanceagainst you and me.
Now is the time to make it clear that our side wont stand for it. We have to show ourselves that we will stand and fight. Our congresspeople need to show leadership. One or two of them standing up and showing real outrage as the outrage unfolds isnt too much to ask.
Ask yourself, if you were there, would just sit with your hands folded and take it? I wouldnt.
