him control them. I wonder if he had rushed down the staircase prior to the start of filming? His billy club is at the bottom of the staircase. When he realized the size of the mob and that he was hopelessly outnumbered, he put his billy club down to negotiate/buy time with that POS "leader." When that wasn't working, he decided to lead them upstairs to where he knew there'd be backup for him, a much larger area to avoid being boxed in and lessen the sense of power they felt in their mobbed up frenzy.
