18. Hi bottomofthehill. If only I could. I followed a job out to Oregon about 6 years ago.

I still have family in the area. If you haven't been back in awhile Worcester has gone through quite a transformation for the better. Kelly Square has been redone and that wonderful "cf" of an intersection has been tamed a bit and downtown has been almost totally rebuilt. The Paw Sox are now the Woo Sox with a new stadium, Polar Park on Canal St, opening this season.
I really miss the mom & pop pizza/sub shops as well. Although Polar products have made it out here to Oregon. The first time I noticed the Polar display in the supermarket I ran into a guy with a Red Sox jersey on, who grew up on Shrewsbury street, buying Seltzer water.

19. Covid has kept my trips north to zero

I am excited to see the new Worcester! Northern VA is the land of chain restaurants, pizza and sub shops. My god, I miss the food of home.

2. I went to Oklahoma City after the bombing, the sights and smells still remain with me to this day

How anyone could defend it on any level is beyond my ability to comprehend, and the fact that he did as a 15 year old confirms there is something wrong with him.

He is a sick fuck if he can defend this on any level

And get the convictions that are needed so we don’t see this again

7. The question is: will this torpedo a run for the Presidency in 2024?

Or juice up his campaign?

We know how evil, hate-filled, and twisted his followers are. They'd probably groove on something like this.

9. Last thing this country needs is an ambitious, overachieving

fascist in the upper levels of government.

Trump spewed deadly lies, and Hawley backed them up.

10. One of my online friends

was in that building. She was safe and uninjured, thankfully, but is deeply rattled to this day. This just makes me want to go after Hawley with a baseball bat. One of Mark McGwire's 44 oz ones.

11. What he wrote about Oklahoma City:

Hawley warned against depicting all militia members as domestic terrorists after the Oklahoma City bombing, which killed 168 people, including 19 children. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, who carried out the attack on the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, had ties to the Michigan Militia.

“Many of the people populating these movements are not radical, right-wing, pro-assault weapons freaks as they were originally stereotyped,” Hawley wrote two months after the bombing.

“Dismissed by the media and treated with disdain by their elected leaders, these citizens come together and form groups that often draw more media fire as anti-government hate gatherings,” Hawley said.

“Feeling alienated from their government and the rest of society, they often become disenchanted and slip into talks of ‘conspiracy theories’ about how the federal government is out to get them.”

“In this politically correct society, derogatory labels such as ‘racist’ are widely misused, and our ability to have open debate is eroding,” he wrote.

12. He is going to run for the presidency.

He could have gone either way as a smart, young man. That he chose to align himself with the religious right wing tells me he doesn’t care about America. He only wishes to punish those who he thinks is standing in the way of rich folk controlling everything.

16. It is hard to judge someone on what they said

when they were fifteen years old. In Hawley's case, one needn't go back that far to find extremist views. I'll just take him at face value for who and what he is today and that is very radical and dangerous.

Meanwhile, fifteen year old Hawley did not defend the Oklahoma bombing. He did however defend militias, indicating he thought not all of them were dangerous, just disgruntled Americans concerned with government overreach. I suppose he thought some of them were in fact "very fine people".

Not everyone is the person they were when they were fifteen, but in Hawley's case, it appears he probably is.

20. He did not defend the bombing, but he defended the groups that did the bombing

Did the bombing, condone the bombing, train for the bombing just like his now current defense of the insurrection, not saying it was right but defending the underlying sentiment that led to it.

23. Yes, I just had a problem

with the subject line of the original post.

Meanwhile, fifteen year old Hawley's defense of militias was disingenuous. Even if all members of militias didn't or wouldn't bomb a federal building, it is likely that most of them applauded it. What is odd though is Hawley doesn't seem like the kind of young person who would have identified with the blue collar militia types. I picture him more as possibly being an arrogant entitled little preppy kid.

25. My anger often leads me to express myself poorly.

And Oklahoma City and the Insurrection, quite frankly, the bullshit of the militia movement makes me crazy. When you see the damage they have done, they are indefensible.

26. Oh no

You expressed yourself just fine and your anger is certainly justified.

When it comes to these ridiculous militia types, there was a rant recently by Corey Ryan Forrester where he asked the extremists, "What the fuck is it that this country hasn’t given you? What has anyone ever done to you?" He was talking to the "patriots" who stormed the Capitol, but it applies to all the militia idiots out there. No matter how much they have or how entitled they are, they will never be satisfied. Its like they just look for excuses to be angry and violent.

17. #1 trump must be impeached #2. Expose all these traitors to the public as much as possible

because people like him are not normal
If everyone wants to be patriotic then rally around removing these traitors like Hawley Cruz or at least hold them in check
He shouldn’t be thought of as a future leader He is a present traitor
This is not normal
trump is not normal
the house has reps who are not normal republicans (or is this the new norm ?)
The US citizens should not be comfortable with an inauguration surrounded by layers of vetted proof military guards fanning out behind wired fencing
Not normal

21. OK bombing was a day before Hitler's birthday

And the same day as the Branch Davidian cult fire.

Of course he celebrates fascism and cults.

It is what they are.
