A lot of Texans, apparently, want to be their own country. Bless their hearts.

(13,020 posts)There is a fringe group here that's been calling for secession for years, as one of the other posters noted. Even loony Rick Perry joined in their cause. BUT majority of even the conservatives here don't want secession. Ain't gonna happen.

(25,117 posts)There have been efforts to promote Texas secession in the state at least since the 1990s.[15] At this time, Richard Lance McLaren founded the Republic of Texas organization based on his property within the Davis Mountains Resort in Jeff Davis County, becoming the most active and influential secession group at the time. Essentially the organization claimed that the United States annexed Texas illegally and considered it to be held captive. The organization held itself out as an alternative government, based on the principle of very limited powers.[6]
McLaren had both supporters and enemies. His supporters generally believed that globalization was a threat to constitutional rights and against Christian principles.[16] Tactics of the group included filing liens against properties, disavowing state and federal authorities, and opening an "embassy". McLaren's legal filings were so numerous that the county clerk gave them a separate cabinet.[16] Members of the Republic of Texas group listed grievances with the U.S. government, such as accusing the government of a corrupt judicial system, paganism, and of creating illegal treaties and illegitimate agencies. Members of the group also stated that the U.S. government had set itself above the people and had exercised its global influences unlawfully against the Constitution. The Republic of Texas members placed a lot of emphasis on the Branch Davidian incident near Waco as an example of all that was wrong with the U.S. government.[6]
In the summer of 1996, injunctions and other court proceedings against McLaren were well underway. In July of that year, McLaren held a press conference a block away from the state courthouse in Austin stating that he refused to appear because he did not recognize the legitimacy of the court.[6] McLaren was jailed for a month by a federal judge for failing to show in court. After his release, McLaren's rhetoric grew stronger.[16][17][18]

It has about as much chance of succeeding as Donald Trump has of creating a third political party.

(10,128 posts)Those belong to the USA not Texas. It's going to be a big hit to the economy when they all close and move elsewhere. Then the new border check points and customs inspections and import duties ought to really improve the Texas economy some more.
Yeah Texas, go for it.

(806 posts)Probably not if they paid into the system. Know many people living overseas that still receive their Social Security, if though they may no longer be U.S. citizens. That would eventually end as the Texans would no longer pay into the system.

(25,117 posts)From 1997:
FORT DAVIS, Texas -- Armed militant separatists who believe Texas should be its own country took two neighbors hostage Sunday and dozens of police moved into the area in remote West Texas.
Richard McLaren, the self-styled ambassador of the Republic of Texas, told San Antonio radio station WOAI that the group would end its standoff at the couples home in exchange for the release of two Republic members under arrest and another key concession.
We want them to ... agree to a referendum to allow Texans to vote on the independence issue, Mr. McLaren said from his groups headquarters in the Davis Mountains, 75 miles north of the Mexico border.
The separatists stormed the home of Joe Rowe and his wife, M.A. Rowe, firing shots, authorities said. Rowe was injured by broken shards of glass in the gunfire, but declined to be exchanged for a volunteer firefighter who offered to replace him, a man identifying himself as White Eagle, a chief aide to Mr. McLaren, told WOAI.

(406 posts)This is the dumbest Idea. I have lived here for over 30 years and keep hearing this nonsense. They would lose most of the oil, as the big pipelines will still be federally controlled. Any US military installations would be moved. Federal funding for roads bridges, etc would evaporate. The nuclear plants will probably have accidents due to the lack of oversight by the NRC.
So Bubbas with six shooters will be left to defend their territory, against a United Central / South American Alliance.

(7,215 posts)1) Texas must purchase all federal lands at pre-Texit market rates.
2) Texas must offer to purchase all private property of US citizens who wish to relocate at pre=Texit market rates.
3) Texas must pay for the relocation of all Federal assets (including NASA)
4) Texas Guard units must either return federally purchased assets, or buy them.
That's just for starters.

(2,214 posts)I say, let them vote for this, then round them up for treason. They say it's freedom of speech and a right to vote. This keeps showing up so the money behind it needs to be tracked back to it's treasonous source. Let none of these individuals serve in office, they are forsworn. Let none of them wrap themselves in the American flag after they fail. These folk do not support the USA. Simple as that. They are Traitors.
They may or may not be Patriots to Texas, but to the Union, they are treasonous hand biters. A Patriot loves their fellow countrymen but I can tell you as a Texan who knows these folk, they don't love their fellow countryman. They are racists on top of everything else.
