This could be good or bad news. Good news if Biden/Schumer and the rest of the Senate Democrats do what Trump/McConnell and he Senate Republicans did and fast track these appointments...bad news if they let the Republicans obstruct and then the Republicans take over the senate in 2023

(18,973 posts)Trump bragged constantly about his judges, but it's not a dramatic remake of the federal judiciary like it was portrayed. He named 226 judges. Obama names 320 and Joe will name close to 200 over the next 4 years. So that will be a 16 year period where Obama and Joe will have named 70% of the federal judges with Trump having 30%.
SCOTUS is a different story, but I think you'll see 2 retire. I think Breyer retires this year and Joe can cement that spot for a long time with a young justice. Thomas has had health problems, he could be the next to retire even though he's only 72. That would leave a 5-4 court with Roberts as the swing vote, that is workable for Dems.
If Joe or another Dem can win the White House in 2024, the judiciary, including the SCOTUS will be liberal at the end of that term. You'd have 16 of 20 years with Dems naming the judges. 80% of the judges would be named by Dems.
McConnell held up Obama appointments and rammed through Trump ones because he probably was fairly sure Trump would be a 1 term President. If Hillary had won the judiciary would be totally dominated by Dems for a generation. As it is now, it's going to be slanted Dem for a long time, save for the SCOTUS.

(13,911 posts)Its a simple majority to confirm judges and we chair the House Judiciary. I would think the process could be fairly speedy.

(13,911 posts)So far the Dems have been doing great. I bet judges will get through quick. Manchin and Sinema wont block Joes judges, I guarantee it.

(58,604 posts)this won't correct the rightward thrust that McConnell engineered. We need to expand the judiciary. There is justification, most of the courts are overloaded as it is.

(13,911 posts)because we can replace these elder judges with young ones who wont be subject to replacement in a future Repub administration.
