A conviction may be more possible than many think it is

Not that it's definite or even likely. But the fact that Republican senators are going out of their way to collude with the defense attorneys suggests that they're worried - otherwise, if a conviction isn't a possibility, why bother? They could just let everything unfold knowing there weren't the votes to convict.

They may know something going in their caucus that we're not aware of - and may be worried that they could lose more than 17 of their colleagues unless they pull out all the stops.

They are sure there will be no conviction in the Senate. They are trying to not lose voters so they can keep trumpism alive.

That is what the collusion is about IMO - keeping the boss happy.

for their next election--so they needed the defense to at least provide some cover for their acquittal vote.

... Nazi, white power, white supremacist, and Fascist Dominionist Christian components of their base.

It is their version of a Big Tent Party, the party of mendacious, malicious,
malevolent, meatheads who they desperately need to show up at the ballot box or the ReThug Party no longer remains relevant in political election contests.

I'm not expecting a conviction - never have - so if it were to happen, it would be like a gift.

People forget that 6 weeks ago, impeachment wasn't even on the radar. We just wanted him gone and looked forward to criminal investigations and charges. I'm still looking forward to those.

and it’ll turn into gold. In fact, it’ll probably happen before repuQ Senators vote to acquit the orange hellbeast.
