SC voter ID law blocked... temporarily, but at least it'll be blocked for this election!
http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2012/10/court-blocks-s-c-voter-id-law-for-2012-but-clears-it-for-the-future/
A federal court in Washington today blocked South Carolina’s Voter ID law from going into effect for the 2012 elections, but said it could go into effect for future elections. Under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, South Carolina — because it has a history of discrimination — had to get approval for the law from federal officials in Washington DC. A three judge panel of federal judges unanimously said today that it couldn’t pre-clear the law “given the short time left before the 2012 elections,” but said that the law was not enacted for a “discriminatory purpose” and could go into effect “beginning with any elections in 2013.” South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson said the ruling is a “major victory” for South Carolina. “It affirms our voter ID law is valid and constitutional under the Voting Rights Act,” Wilson said. He said that the law does not discriminate and he would “work diligently to implement this law for all future elections.”

5. That's how all of these laws should have been handled.
Changes to any voting regulations should be done at least a year prior to any election the laws would impact. That seems fair to me.

6. The law should be summarily shot dead by Washington DC
because they are highly discriminatory.

7. We need a national voting law.
I really hope that next year a Democratic president and a Democratic Congress will pass a national voting law that will standardize registration, early voting, voting times, etc.
The federal government has the power to regulate federal elections throughout the entire nation, that is elections for president, the House of Representatives and the Senate. The states will surely go along for their state offices as well. U.S. citizens in the whole country ought to have the same rights to vote everywhere ... not dependent upon extremist Repuglican legislatures in particular states (or even the whims of Democratic legislatures, too, for that matter). |

8. Absolutely. Makes perfect sense.
That's why they will never agree to it.
