The song was written and first recorded by Huey "Piano" Smith and His Clowns, the legendary New Orleans R&B outfit known for their hit songs “Don’t You Just Know It” and “Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu.” Their record label replaced the original vocals by Smith (who’s black) with vocals by Ford (who was white) without the band’s permission. It’s generally considered an early example of racism in the record industry, and drove Smith to eventually change labels.
