(36,351 posts)the Republicans of today he was a good guy. The loser of a presidential election is never from again why can't "The Loser" just disappear?
I was never a fan, and was glad when Clinton beat him in 96, but he is a fundamentally decent man. I think he's he last sane Republican that ran for President. He was around during the Gingrich take-over, but never seemed to be an extremist. Put him up against Trump, any of the Tea Partiers/Freedom Caucus /Q Creatures from the last 12 years and you really can see the fundamental shift in the party.

(842 posts)...when Dole was considered an "arch-conservative", and the "hatchet man" for the more moderate presidential candidate Gerald Ford. The same Dole who was responsible for the SNAP program that keeps millions out of hunger today. Republicans used to be a different type of people.

(5,571 posts)So happy to have B. Clinton instead of him, but Dole was a war hero and a more old-school (read: Eisenhower) republican.
Political ads for now senator Marshal of Kansas during last years election. He also backed trump.

Neither of them was as bad as Trump though. Todays GOP are just stupid. Mean and stupid. Ignorant, mean and stupid.

(16,582 posts)We could go on. But it's amazing how the whole damn party from the states to the federal seem to feel it's their duty to be dishonest, dishonorable, cheating, ...
I remember him on SNL after losing the election and he was hilarious and earned my respect for how he handled it. He was truly funny in a situation most people could not handle.

I didn't like his politics in the 1990's, but I always respected the man.
Those were the days when you could actually discuss issues with the other side.

Ground her good name & good reputation into the dirt & MSM & social media love, love, loved it.
Trump was The Man.
Pitiful wasn't it.

And here's President Biden giving a simply & personal gesture as a friend, to his friend in his last days.
An example for all, good deeds over vile words.
Thanks President Biden 🍃

This was a massive effort of kindness & to the many who won't be promoted by name or media reach, I applaud them the most.
Without these unnamed givers of time & generosity, this effort would not have been successful.
Thank you~

(14,586 posts)regularly on the nightly news - usually on Huntley-Brinkley or Walter Cronkite shows. Memories are very vague now but I still can see him talking to reporters in the Capital hallways, always well dressed and usually harrumphing about taxes being too high after a Senate session.
But always a gentleman and willing to compromise to a degree and as others have said, a great sense of humor.
I hope his passing is easy and wish his family peace.......
And, thank you Joe for being the kind, considerate gentleman you are.....

(746 posts)At the annual Gridiron Club dinner, an event in Washington, DC largely devoted to political humor, Senate Republican leader Bob Dole told a story about a recent event when he saw former presidents Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Richard Nixon standing together on the podium. Dole claimed that he told people to Look! Hear no evil, see no evil, and evil (Nixon).

(10,531 posts)He was the one who began the policy of swift boating. The lies about Whitewater started with him.
And then he agreed to reinstitute the independent counsel statute, which he had just recently killed in a filibuster. I see know reason for that reversal other than that he knew that William Rehnquist would appoint partisan Republican judges like David Sentelle, who would then baselessly replace the independent counsel with someone like Ken Starr. He also enabled Ken Starr's criminal conduct for years by making it clear that all hell would break loose if anyone tried to stop him.

(21,483 posts)Happens all the time here, and I am sick and tired of it. Look at some of these posts. Bob Dole was a war hero, and a decent human being, and a respectable leader who would have no place in today's Trump GOP. President Biden thinks so, and is far more likely to lower our nation's flag to half staff for Bob Dole than (puke) Rush Limbaugh,
