and a granola bar while their partner stands in line.

I believe this is meant to stop people from luring people to the polls with offers of free food or beverages.

Something that I could see as much more likely to happen in ... you guessed it ... poorer and/or minority neighborhoods.

CLEARLY water should be excluded from this rule.

That was the first word that popped into my head when I read this. These Georgia legislators are absolute assholes!

I see this getting challenged in court, honestly. How can it be a crime to give somebody food, much less water? What kind of absolute dickheads do you have to make a law against THAT? Fucking Repuglicans are are being extra repugnant in Georgia right now!!!

I'm saying what the auspices are ... offering food and drink is a 'bribe' to show up to vote. That's their bullshit story.

Next I expect them to ban 'any roof' to be present above where people standing in line, and that sharing an umbrella is a felony. Also, using a hand fan on anybody but yourself is a felony.

After that, they'll say children under 18 are not allowed with 1000 yards of a polling location (because poorer folks are more likely to need to bring the kids to the polling place).

They're just going to pour on the bullshit tactics, and count on the shithead Trump-appointed judges (and Supremes) to back their fucking cheating.

Remember Trump's admiration of the control of authoritarian leaders over their always oppressed and always impoverished peoples? The efforts of the RW authoritarian extremists in congress and state governments to take over the government and free themselves from our control began before him and will continue until they no longer have enough power to keep the revolutionary fire going.

I don't doubt you're correct about the long term goal. Didn't mean to imply it's only about the minority vote, but I think that the immediate goal is inconveniencing groups of voters they believe are more likely to vote D to help them win.

This is not simply meant to harass and abuse voters, it's a very aggressive expression of hostility toward all who would oppose them AND to democracy itself.

I think this is their 'excuse' ... they're codifying that feeding and watering people waiting in lines to vote is 'bribery', which as you say is already illegal.

They're going to create long lines in heavy D areas and then make it as inconvenient for people to stand in those long lines ... as possible.

We've already seen this strategy of theirs in play for many years.

Yes, the longer term goal is, I'm sure, even more nefarious, as you pointed out.

... people can ask during future elections, "Why are the pre-election polls even WORSE now?!"

Well, it's the difference between SAYING how you'll vote, and later not bothering to vote after the various GOP hurdles.

Offer to do the same for them. It's a shitty law but the people most likely to stand in long lines are probably the folks most likely to vote in favor of democracy over fascism.

It just isn't right that political campaigns can't approach people waiting to vote with a free pizza and beverage with the pizza box printed with "Vote for "insert candidates name here" for congress"

How could that ever influence anyone's vote?

It would have to be passed by the senate as well, then signed into law by the governor.

All these bills are attacks by the current insurrectionist majority of the Republican Party to overthrow the sovereignty of the people, end goal authoritarian control by them of everyone else.

AJC: HB 531 would:

Limit Sunday voting to one optional Sunday in each county.
Restrict the use of ballot drop boxes by requiring them to be located inside early voting locations.
Require a driver’s license number, state ID number or copy of photo ID to vote absentee.
Set a deadline to request absentee ballots 11 days before election day
Disqualify provisional ballots cast in the wrong precinct.
Ban outside funding of elections from nonprofit organizations.
Prohibit governments from mailing unsolicited absentee ballot applications.
Create instant-runoff voting for military and overseas voters.
Schedule runoffs four weeks after election day rather than the current nine weeks.
Prevent free food and drinks for voters waiting in line to vote.
Restrict early voting buses to emergencies.

Republicans, under the rubric of religious freedom are insisting worship services should proceed with no restrictions at all during the pandemic. Frame the provision of food and water to folks standing in line to vote under Matthew 10 verse 42. Don't Bibles in Georgia have that verse? Why are Georgia Republicans trying to block people from gaining God's favor?
