General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWell it's finally happened ...FB fight
I said I'd never do it. FB is no place for political discourse, IMHO. And in truth, I am doing it through messenger, not FB "publicly".
My adversary is a sheriff's deputy. Yeah, go big or go home, right? Neighbors' son.
Fortunately his jurisdiction is 3 counties away.
It's very strange. His parents are liberal friends. He's a bad seed. Very authoritarian and extreme in his political views; friendly guy in person. Your basic white supremacist.
He posted that Abbott's mask lifting is just fine because, liberty. I went at him with, should we be free to drive drunk? You know the shtick.
His was response was rather opaque, though he inferred my comment was kneejerk.
I haven't yet pulled out that as a political science major with a fair amount of coursework in political philosophy, no, my thinking on this is not kneejerk. I did ask him if he thought the right to define it as kneejerk attended to him, because of his badge and gun.
It's still on...

(17,604 posts)..sheriffs are the WORSE!
cilla4progress
(24,717 posts)That's why I used the DUI example to show him his folly.
His response was clearly not thoughtful, and only insulting, calling MY comment kneejerk.
Jerk...

(24,717 posts)to one of his comments that drug abuse is an illness and should be decriminalized.
Bet that will get a knee jerk out of him!

(17,604 posts)..are not arrest able offenses. Bet some rumper sheriffs are pissed about that. Cant bust minorities heads anymore!

(24,717 posts)here (I'm in WA, too ...this is all on the east side of the state. Go figure...).
On that issue, his liberal mom did seem to disagree with the Court..I honestly don't know enough about it. I am quite familiar with the court, however...

(17,604 posts)..and I have blocked most my family.

(8,445 posts)I hardly ever post.
I also use it to surveil. It's just a guilty pleasure of mind that I need to overcome.
Right now I'm checking out my ex-husband's nephew's FB. He's a right-wing nutjob. Last week his mother died here in Colorado, and he lives in California. He didn't bother to figure out a way to come and see his mother here for years, and now he's been begging everyone he knows to contribute money so he can get back here for her memorial service, which is today. He's suckered a little less than $500 out of people, and says he needs $2,000 so he can bring the family.
Like I said, it's today. Maybe he should have pawned a couple of his guns.
I know I shouldn't be amused by this, but I am.

(402 posts)I do not patronize that business. And i keep in touch with the family I care directly, the rest aren't worth the bother.

(3,687 posts)Talk about bad business advertising; "find us on Facebook".
OK, then I go there and get a 'you are not authorized to see this' message.

(16,917 posts)publish that as a warning label that can be used on tons of right-wing wackos!!

(2,343 posts)And I know that sounds like one of those people who want you to know they dont have a TV! Or the person who lets you quickly know theyre vegetarian! Lol.
But...I dont miss FB. The big plus is not seeing sides of people I rather like but who are wrong on most important things. Ignorance, in these cases, is bliss!

(8,445 posts)The only people I follow these days are those who post photos and videos of my grandchildren.

(12,842 posts)Get rid of speeding laws then. Also, make halting at Stop Signs discretionary. Because. Freedom.
cilla4progress
(24,717 posts)And all HIS responses are about his free-dumb. He can't even track the argument coherently!
I did just ask him what he does when he stops a car that is not using proper restraints for their children, or their own belt. Let them go, because, freedom?
He is trying to make this about his free speech rights! I told him it's not about that- it's about the proper role of the state, which includes protecting public health and safety.
Pretty interesting getting this peek inside the mind of one of them. My bet is he just gives up in frustration because there is no sense or reason to his position.

(732 posts)Don't make your response a public post, use the private message. Never start out with you fool or other derogatory remark. So in this case, start with, yeah I want to end the face masks also. I hate how hot they are, they fog up my glasses. You get the idea, then start in on why its just too soon.
My experience has been when I use the above method, I most likely don't change their minds, but they do end up deleting the post. The second advantage is they won't remove you as a friend, so you will get the chance to keep working on them via private message. Remember if you want to change a mind you first must find some common ground and keep a cool head.

(24,717 posts)I'm trying not to make it personal. I would actually appreciate it if I could find just ONE trumper who will dialogue sensibly with me! I had a bad almost psychotic experience of this right after the 2016 election and have steered clear ever since.
Good tips - thanks!

(24,717 posts)And normally do not engage.
But this is a Sheriff Deputy posting shit that Abbott lifting the mask mandate in TX is a matter of personal freedom.
Well, guess what: he is putting ALL of us at unnecessary risk!
I just could take it NO MORE!
This guy is a serial right-wing poster. I can't believe the Sheriff's Office doesn't make him cut it out.

(2,636 posts)Isn't the (il)logical end of his position that we don't need any laws? That he himself is superfluous, because freedom? Who needs headlights on at night? I can see. Who needs speed limits? I'll drive the right speed for the prevailing conditions.
It's a temporary public health crisis. Not a permanent way of life, unless these idiots have their way.
Methinks the desperate attempts to minimize the virus are a coping mechanism for those who are deeply fearful of the virus. They want it to be the flu. It's not. (I've had it.)
They say 99.9% survive. They're wrong. Fatality rate is 1.7%.
They say well, they were old and sick, as though they will forever be 48 and at the tail end of their fading prime, and they'll never have heart disease or cancer or diabetes.
They do not know anyone who's had it, and they certainly don't know anyone who's died. It's still invisible and abstract to these constitutional scholars turned virologists turned electoral college experts. Like all GOP/Libertarian bent-until it affects them personally, the rest of us can suck it.
cilla4progress
(24,717 posts)and thanks for your excellent and heartfelt post! It is appreciated!

(82,849 posts)"Everybody knows" you should drive on the right side of the street. Why do we need a law telling us that?
What does Deputy Dawg think would happen if that "totally unnecessary law because everybody knows it" was repealed? He knows quite well what would happen: Mayhem on the streets and highways. "There's no law against driving on the sidewalk! Pedestrians should keep alert and be ready to jump out of my way. Oncoming motorists should just anticipate that I might jump lanes because I really need to get where I'm going."

(24,717 posts)If he responds to my latest, I'll throw this at him....
I mean, this isn't rocket science. Has he not considered these arguments before? Very interested to find out if his position has any coherence whatsoever.
Crap - I was seeking a worthy adversary. I hope he doesn't disappoint!
