Would you run to anywhere-but-here. OR face the music ?.

(268,724 posts)Many former British Caribbean territories still maintain ties with the racists including Jamaica and Barbados. Guyana &Trinidad and Tobago became republics after Independence but Dominica became a republic at Independence.
Barbados is about to remove the Queen and the rest of that shit

(146,262 posts)It's especially true if you cannot pass as a Mexican citizen. You would be immediately noticed as not belonging there. It is far easier to hide in a large city, frankly.
Why are you thinking about all this, anyway?

And later, I would complain about jail living conditions for sympathy.

RockRaven
(14,913 posts)if you really want to avoid extradition you are more likely looking at Russia, most ex-USSR except Baltic, China, Mongolia, 2/3 of African nations, the Arabian peninsula, many of the -stan countries, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and some really tiny countries.
All of North and South America, even Cuba and Venezuela, have extradition treaties with the US.

(6,477 posts)The ones who are convicted of assaulting police will get 18 months, tops. The violent entries will get a year. The others will get fines, etc., and little to no jail time.

greenjar_01
(6,477 posts)So they likely have little in the way of records. Sentencing disparities also mean that they would have had alternative sentencing and records expungement.
That said, we often hear the maximum possible penalties as a matter of journalistic (mal)practice, when the actual likely sentences are much, much lower according to the ordinary guidelines. It's the general racist perceptions of judges and prosecutors and the disparity in policing practices (i.e., minoritized communities are more aggressively policed) that exacerbates sentencing disparities.

(146,262 posts)So, I don't worry about things that will never happen. I would never do something illegal that might send me to prison for 20 years. Or for any time at all, really.
It's foolish, though, to think a person could run off to another country and hide. Strangers are noticed, especially if they aren't fluent in the local language.
Cinnamonspice
(163 posts)I don't have the resources to just make a new life in a foreign country.
Also, if I did something really awful, I might feel I should be punished for it. I'd get into prison and be like "What was I thinking?"

(2,147 posts)Usually they don't. Getting caught a week or so after making a run for it doesn't make "almost" IMO. Since most of these people happily left video, audio, texts, DNA, and carried cell phones that were traced by automated communication equipment in the Capitol, I don't think most of them will get very far.
Maybe there are a few a consummate primitive survivalist who can live off the land using stone tools, but otherwise you eventually run out of money, friends, safe houses, clothes, bullets, or whatever you needed for your plan to work. And I think most of this group just can't think things through very well, like planning for the collapse of civilization by stocking up on canned food only to realize their plan requires electric can opener when a natural disaster kills the power for a week
