Has your weight changed during the pandemic? 61% of Americans are up or down -- avg of 29 lbs gained

Yikes! Average weight gain of 29 pounds during the Covid era. Those who have lost weight are down on average of 26 pounds.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) – A year after the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, more than half of U.S. adults report undesired weight change.

The American Psychological Association (APA) reports 61% of adults have experienced weight loss or weight gain, unintentionally, over the last year.

Conway Medical Center’s Bariatric Specialist, Dr. Zaher Nuwayhid, says when you add staying home plus mental disturbance, the outcome is obesity.

“Most of my patients have either been not losing weight or have been gaining weight. And every time I speak with them, they say, ‘doctor listen, I’ve been home, and all I do is eat,’” Dr. Nuwayhid said.

I can see people gaining or losing some weight for various reasons. But those are huge swings. Almost half of millennials report an average gain of 41 pounds in one year? You’d really have to be working hard to eat that much differently than your normal diet.

For sixty years of my life I was much less likely to eat whenever I was anxious.

I'd lose weight when I was anxious.

My wife and I haven't enjoyed a movie-or-show-or-concert-and-dinner date night for more than a year now.

Junk food and Netflix is an inadequate substitute.

I have a GI condition that allows me little choice in what to eat, check FODMAP diet.

I have learned over the last year that I can make a lot of things for myself just by testing and by doing so I have no more pain, I don't need my meds multiple times a day and I have not spent one single hour rolling around in pain or....well all the other stuff that goes along with GI issues.

By learning what to eat I ate less because it was heavier food than strained apple juice. I ate less and was never ever hungry. Now I eat because I need to.

That 30 pounds was gained because of my diet and my health is better and I lost it because I made up my own. Add the stress of all of this the weight has been stable now for at least 4 months.

YAY!

We haven't changed our eating habits and try to make most of our meals healthy, tasty and varied. We don't eat a lot of fats or any junk food and we don't binge eat out of anxiety or even the proximity of the refrigerator.

Actually, I've weighed pretty much the same since the early 1980s. I'm one of the lucky ones in that regard!

but I wouldn’t recommend the weight loss methods. Two serious infections, five surgeries and nearly six weeks in the hospital will not replace Weight Watchers.
