A Single Texas Hotel Reports $350k in Lost Revenue Due to End of Mask Mandate

Earlier this month, Texas GOP Governor Greg Abbot defied health experts when he lifted his state’s mask mandate.

Now, Texas entrepreneurs are paying the price.

According to a report in Thursday’s Texas Tribune, at least four organizations cancelled conventions in Austin, the state capital, citing health concerns stemming from Abbot’s dismissal of CDC guidelines. The Austin Hilton has lost $350,000 in revenue because of the cancellations, according to Austin Convention Enterprises.

---snip---

On Thursday, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology cited the expiration of Texas’ Covid-19-related precautions when it announced that it would no longer be holding the in-person portion of its annual conference that was set to take place in Austin. It’s unclear if the organization is one of the four already reported on.

The CEO of the health organization told The Texas Tribune that the mask mandate ending “felt like the rug being pulled out from underneath us.”

I don't think so. It's not just the hotel: it's the airport, transportation, restaurants, etc. No way I'd enter Texas.

On the part of this convention. No masks, NO people. Safety first.

In early August, the annual Science Fiction convention I attend will be held. The Hyatt Regency Downtown Minneapolis has a Mask Mandate in effect that I am all too happy to comply with. Social distancing might pose a challenge, but I will be carrying hand sanitizer with me and sure the hotel will have Purell stations all about the place. There are many open spaces for people to congregate without being on top of one another. I will be mindful at all times.

Here in Minnesota, Gov. Tim Walz just issued vaccines will be open March 30th for people 16 and over. We are progressing here. The Renaissance Festival is set to commence for its 50th Anniversary a few weeks later. I am sure masks will be required and that is fine with me. The face will stay cleaner that way.

Problem is some do, and especially in the case of FL, millions of idiots will go to spring break, Disneyworld or wherever, get infected and bring it back to their home state.
