Fringe benefit of vaccine passports

This may be obvious, but this thought occurred to me only recently.

Gone are the days of the Jim Crow laws where minority groups are explicitly denied freedoms enjoyed by others. Nowadays the persecution is more subtle. Instead of calling out "undesirable" groups by name, laws are kept on the books which can be disproportionally applied to them. Examples of this include marijuana laws, parole searches, and "bathroom bills". There are many, many others. In addition to laws, there are rules enforced by companies and schools around things like uniforms, hairstyles, and even wedding cakes.

Generally speaking, these tools of discrimination always seems to be wielded by privileged white right-wingers in defiance of the outrage of the left.

Until now.

Now there is discussion of a vaccine passport. Those who opt out of getting a vaccine will encounter headwinds trying to go about their daily routine. They will encounter headwinds boarding a plane, entering an arena, using mass transit, travelling across state lines, etc. Recent polls show that Republicans are three to four times as likely as Democrats to opt out of getting the vaccine. Republicans will be far more likely to get mired in the quagmire of not having a passport as they watch their Democratic peers go merrily about their day.

So it's the proverbial taste of one's own medicine.

4. They're going to have to come up

with some sort of ID that is not easy to counterfeit. The card they gave me when I got vaccinated could be faked by a 12 year-old with access to a Xerox machine. It didn't even have my name on it. They told me to fill it out myself. They also need to pass laws with severe penalties for faking one.

They had an effective launch of their contact tracing app last year. We had a half-hearted mish mash of shitty apps that never caught on.

but my driver's license has a magnetic strip on it. Maybe they could load the vaccination info into that strip. And for those who don't drive, the DMV ID card has the same configuration as the DL.

8. In NY, vaccinations are pretty well documented, it seems.

Anything documenting my status in that regard would presumably be state issued, and thus could be as secure as a driver's license.

If it's a municipal or county scrap of paper, there's no value in it.

folks who got vaccinated already may have lost their cards. State and local governments were issuing vaccines and may not have kept the best records. Same with the various retail location where people got vaccinated. I would keep my card, but I'm sure lots of people have not.

Then there are fake cards that people can forge. So not sure how accurate any passport would be if/when the US implements it.

Already have one in NYS.

The passport will go in my wallet on my phone.

Already you need to have one in NYS to go to a pro sports game and now college sports. If you aren’t vaccinated you will need to produce a negative test - the results of which will also. E uploaded to your phone.

I think most people who refuse to get vaccinated will tire quickly of having to get a test before being able to do things.

I’m sure pretty soon for concerts, Broadway and anywhere else large crowds gather will be subjected to the same regulation.

And also, if you want to fly internationally or enter any country, they are going to want proof you are vaccinated (and not a card that can be easily forged.) And if one isn’t vaccinated it will mean more testing before and after you reach your destination and a quarantine up to two weeks at your expense. Most people are not going to want to have to do that.

The people who refuse will just not have as much freedom as the rest of us. Their choice.

NYS Dept of Health gets your vaccination info as soon as you get your first shot. Even just making an appointment gets you a reply from DOH with a submission ID#.

20. Yeah, I was surprised when I got a notification about my second shot from the DOH

I had been scheduled one day later than the usual (March 25 instead of 24).
I got a text on the 24th that I was late and needed to get my shot. Didn’t know it was that closely controlled.

I recall there was a bar code to my iPhone to register with CDC.
