Former North Las Vegas police chief Joseph Chronister retired on Thursday -- so, naturally, he's decided to spend his new free time disclosing stories of widespread municipal corruption.

One such story involves North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee, who allegedly received special treatment from law enforcement when he reported that some child pornography mysteriously appeared on his iPad last year. According to Chronister and the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Lee contacted the police for help after receiving (he claims) an email containing "kiddie porn," which he wanted to make go away. So, it seems the police helped the mayor do just that -- despite the fact that, after a day-long investigation, a detective could find no evidence of the email in question.

Via the Review-Journal:

In his report, the detective said he found no emails having to do with porno­graphy of any kind but did find links to three pornographic websites in the iPad’s browser history. Two of the sites were not illegal, the detective determined, but the third showed pornography organized by the country where the images originated. He said the site looked illegal.

“I did locate several possible photos that could be considered child porno­graphy, but since they were in a different country, I could not verify the age of the people pictured,” the detective wrote. [...]

Chronister said his understanding, based on conversations with the detective, is that the mayor’s explanation about pornography associated with an email couldn’t have happened as the mayor described.

Finding nothing he could prove illegal on the iPad, the detective took it to an Apple Store and had it wiped clean the next day, according to the report. In his report, the detective said an Apple employee told him that a deleted email would no longer be on the device.

Former FBI agent and computer crimes expert Joseph Dooley, who spoke with the Review-Journal, was baffled by the series of events, and basically called bullshit on the detective's report. "If he thinks it’s child porn, it’s child porn," Dooley said. "It doesn’t matter what country it’s in. That sentence makes no sense to me."

North Las Vegas Mayor John J. Lee announced Tuesday that he is switching his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican, citing the party’s leftward shift and fueling speculation that he may run for a higher office in 2022.

Lee made the announcement during an appearance on Fox and Friends early Tuesday, saying the state Democratic Party’s recent leadership takeover by members of the Democratic Socialists of America had convinced him to finally switch political parties.

“Though I’ve been a registered Democrat on paper my entire life, I made the switch in my heart a long time ago, because on some things, there’s simply no compromise,” he said in a statement. “That’s why I voted for President Trump twice. That’s why I had an A+ rating from the NRA and their endorsement in my time in the state senate. I refuse to compromise my pro-life, pro-2nd Amendment values. I know there are countless others who want to make the switch, because it means the difference between hope and despair for their children and grandchildren. I hope they join me.”

Lee’s campaign said he was the most prominent elected official to switch parties since President Joe Biden took office earlier this year. His updated website urges others to make the “switch,” and outlines several broad policy objectives — “smaller government, lower taxes, free speech, protect unborn life, protect the right to bear arms, and the embrace (of) the spirit of liberty that made America so great in the first place.”

2. Joseph Dooley is the one not making sense here.

The detective found links to websites. (maybe in his favorites?) not the downloads themselves. Looking at the websites he could not factually determine than any of them had obviously illegal content. (Not to mention whether the Ipad user accessed any illegal content while visiting the sites) There simply isn't a crime here.

If someone posts child porn onto Facebook (And yes this happens and yes this has been documented) it hardly means anyone with a link to Facebook on their device is guilty of possessing child porn.

Unless I am really reading this wrong, this seems like a strange story of an old man occasional looks at porn of an undetermined nature.

FBI guy, without ever seeing the I-Pad, the specific websites, or the material therein -- knows exactly what he (didn't) see, and feels absolutely comfortable in second guessing and slamming the detective and investigation that did have access. Which sounds -- just the slightest bit -- like a considerable amount of Monday morning quarterbacking. Here's a tip: prosecute the cases in front of you, bub.

North Las Vegas mayor joins Republican Party

North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee has left the Democratic Party to become a Republican, citing socialist elements within the party.

“It’s not the party I grew up in 25 years ago in this environment, and it’s not the party I can stand with anymore,” Lee said in an interview on Fox News today. Lee also noted that he voted twice for former President Donald Trump.

In early March, progressives backed by the Democratic Socialists of America swept the party elections in the Nevada Democratic Party. Lee cited those elections as a reason for his switch.

9. The most likely sequence of events as I read this actually is ...

1) dude visited a site with a bunch of porn of unknown provenance, who knows where he got the link, could've just been google, or he clicked on it from one the legal sites ... either way, it sounds like it was likely not via email,
2) as he looked around, he saw some of the same images the detective saw, and became alarmed that somehow some of this could end up on his computer (which he's right, it might, due to browser caching), or because maybe the Feds are watching internet traffic and he could be in trouble for it, regardless of whether he sought that type of porn out specifically,
3) so he called the cops pre-emptively, to hopefully avoid trouble.

Visiting a site that happened to have questionable underage images without your knowing it would be there is different from purposefully seeking out and downloading that material to your computer (or receiving it from other private parties).

Or at least it should be.

And the idea that "If he thinks it’s child porn, it’s child porn," is only true under the specific circumstance that it's 100% obviously someone under is 18 involved.

I've stumbled on videos on the pronhub, which is of course quite mainstream, that I *suspected* might be showing someone under 18, but I couldn't be sure, because no actual faces were shown. Does that mean I *must* be right, because I suspected? Of course not.
