When Rachel posted her story, it really hit home.
My husband, who is ten years older than me, got both of his shots before I was eligible to make an appointment. He commented on being surprised at what a relief it was to finally get vaccinated. And I was relieved for him.
When I finally became eligible I tried and tried to find an appointment. It was frustrating. There was nothing anywhere. Finally, about two weeks after "eligibility" my husband had me try the website at about midnight. Just on a hunch or something. Turns out they had JUST opened up a bunch of times, and I was able to book a shot for the next day. I knew I would be relieved, but...
I cried. I couldn't help it. The relief just washed over me, and the emotion was strong.
That was about ten days ago. Ten more, and I get my next one. No more tears, just happiness.
For all of you who are waiting, and frustrated--know that we are with you. We're still masking up, still encouraging everyone, and still hopeful that everyone can and will get vaccinated soon. I know it's frustrating. But it's worth the wait.
Next up...getting my two grown kids appointments. They just became eligible, and have been checking for times. Hopefully...soon.

(4,440 posts)I found it frustrating at times to keep seeing comments by people who got the vaccination, knowing I wasn't eligible and would have to wait. Now that I've finally been vaccinated my celebration is somewhat blunted by knowing others continue to wait, including one of my three grown kids.
All we can do is what you said, keep being safe, offer support and help, and continue with precautions in an effort to protect everyone.
I know how you were feeling when you got your appointment and cried. When my wife shouted down to the basement to tell me she had an appointment I put my head in my hands and began to cry, because she has health issues that made me worry what might happen if she got Covid. It's been a rough year, and I hope we're finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

(4,079 posts)My brothers all live in Texas where it appears to be a free-for-all. They all got appointments, mostly through personal connections to people who could "hook them up".
Meanwhile, here in Colorado everyone is following the rules set out by the state. Everyone is waiting their turn. I was tempted to drive down to Dallas to see if I could get in. That's how desperate I was.

(8,814 posts)I registered on ten different sites and waited a month before one called me and it was outside of Denver Metro. (What?)
I know a lot of people, and none of them could help me.
Three days before I received the call, Gov Polis said in the press that he was getting ready to open the whole next age bracket to vaccinations.
Not that I think they ever read them, but I emailed him and stated that I knew scores of people in the first bracket that had been trying everywhere for weeks and weeks and none of us still were able to get our vaccine. I asked him why in hell he was opening the next bracket, with so many in the first bracket waiting.
Imagine how much further we would be if The F***ing Repubs and Trump hadn't done everything they could do to stall and delay reacting to the Virus. The only person on earth that I can think of that would want to do that is Putin..........

(4,079 posts)They were about to open it up to everyone, and I couldn't find an appointment within a hundred miles. It really looks like they got a bunch of vaccine dumped into CO on the 28th or so of March, and things started opening up.
Also,

Yes. It has never been so clear that having the right person in the Oval saves lives!

(51,585 posts)In CA 50 years and older were finally eligible for vaccines on April1st but I couldn't get an appointment until that date. Someone suggested I try Kaiser, even though I wasn't a member any longer. I called them and got an appointment for April 22. I had hoped it would be sooner but after waiting a year a few more weeks is OK.

(22,250 posts)so they will have extra. Call some pharmacies if there is a red area near you. That is what Chris LeVoi on Stephanie Miller's show did.
A friend of mine here in Fort Worth drove all the way to Canton (maybe 1 1/2 hours) because they had plenty and needed to use it.
We got ours fairly early because we are over 70

(51,585 posts)bit if they try to send me far away for the 2nd shot I may have to go to a red area. My sister got the shot on April 2nd but they scheduled her 2nd dose 1 1/2 hours from here.

(7,715 posts)I stayed up until 1am on April 1 trying to book an appointment, and no luck.
At 930am on April 1, I was in my car with my laptop in between appointments and errands. I tried the county site and there were TONS of appointments for the next day. I was delighted and got vaccinated the next day.
For folks trying in CA, just have multiple websites open and keep trying. You'll get it. Mine was at a drive-through supersite at the Oakland Coliseum. I think you'll have better luck at those sites than at Walgreens or CVS. If you get one at least at Oakland Coliseum, which was a drive-through, you can basically come at any time of the day so long as you have an appointment for that day.
BUT KEEP TRYING THEM ALL UNTIL YOU GET IT!

(7,715 posts)Except our family's insurance plan.
That was TOTALLY irrelevant to signing up for the vaccine on the Alameda County website. Just open all available registration websites,, and you should be ok. In your case, you have an appointment, so that's good.
But my point is that I easily got an appointment on the first day of eligibility. For those who have problems, KEEP TRYING!

(2,284 posts)I got my first shot Thursday, and just burst into tears - relief, gratitude...
But I also agree about the wait!
I got to get my shot when I did because I'm diabetic. Yay?
I've been home for the better part of the last year, though.
My husband started working out of the house again last July, and it looks like he's going to be the last person vaccinated in our entire family (sisters, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law all work in healthcare, parents all in their 70s) besides my 7-year-old daughter!
It's frustrating.
But yes, still taking all the steps to keep everyone else safe.
We will get there.

(6,171 posts)Getting the shot, both if you use Pfizer or Moderna, is a tremendous relief. Also, as other relatives and friends get their shots, it's so satisfying to know those around you are safe.

I had play Vaccine Lotto for 3 or 4 weeks before I hit the CVS website at just the right time 4 weeks ago. Same frustrations, same feelings of relief my spouse got it, etc etc.
...but now I have gotten my 2cd Pfizer last week and in 9 more days I'll be fully protected too.
Congrats!

(4,079 posts)I couldn't believe we hit the website at JUST the right time. All the people getting shots that day talked about being surprised to see openings for shots all of a sudden. The vaccination site was JOYFUL.

(21,433 posts)an appointment after I was eligible that I just gave up and decided to wait until the vaccine was everywhere, whenever that might be.
I had called a county organization for seniors and they said they would put me on awaiting list, but if they did not get more vaccine, it would likely be September for my shots. I called my primary care provider and they said they had not received word on whether they would receive any vaccine. They put me on their waiting list.
Then, out of nowhere, after Biden announced a release of more vaccine, Rite Aid made an arrangement with the senior housing complex where I live to use the lobby of one of our 3 apartment buildings as a vaccination site and gave us appointment times to be there.
Two weeks after I got the first shot, my doctor's office messaged me that they had received some vaccine if I still wanted an appointment. A couple days after that, a friend who is a nurse called to tell me about a vaccination site and how to register. Yesterday, after getting my second shot, I stopped at my regular pharmacy, CVS, to pick up a few things. Just inside the door was a registration table with arrows pointing to the back of the store where vaccine shots were being given.
After a drought of vaccines, we got flooded with them.
Hope everyone else is able to get them now that the shots are more available.

(67,782 posts)....both of us up at several places around the area, and waited. There were no immediate appointments, we were on waiting lists. I was avoiding news stories, envious of everyone who was able to get their shots, wondering when we would hear from anyone.
Then about three weeks ago I got a call from the closest (and best) place for us, our regular doctor's organization. They had an appointment for my wife in TWO days! She wanted to wait for the one-shot J&J, so they let me take her appointment.
I was nervous the night before, but when I went there I was in and done in 8 minutes (plus the 15 minute observation period). While I was rolling up my sleeve to get the shot I was thinking, "after a year THIS IS IT!" I floated out of the place and was giddy all the way home.
But it was starting to look like the J&J was going to be a while. However, on Monday I saw there was a pharmacy offering the J&J, needed to call them. I called - nothing - we were put on the waiting list. I called the next day, they had an appointment THIS week! We're going tomorrow morning. And then at noon next Saturday I'll get my second.
Again, after everything that's gone on over the last year, it's unbelievable that for us, at least, we're seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and will be fully vaccinated in a week. It's almost as exciting as our wedding day (don't tell my wife!)
I hope everyone gets their shots by sometime in May and we can start returning to somewhat "normal".

(17,285 posts)And I agree it is a very emotional moment. The relief! The release. Letting go (to a large degree) of anxiety we werent even always aware of.
My husband is 25 years older and I danced when I got his appointment. I was so, so, so happy. Then a month or so later when I got mine I to got teary eyed.
I made appointments for many friends who couldnt find an appointment. The trick was to be persistent and continually try all the locations (county/state sponsored sites as well as drugstore and grocery store chains). There is no rhyme or reason, as you found out, to when they each open more appointments. Although the local news in my city will sometimes have an alert of when county sponsored appointments will be opened the next day.

(20,178 posts)It was a well organized county drive through set up and they said they would contact me in 3 weeks for the second shot. 3 weeks would have been Easter weekend, so when it came and went without a call, I thought maybe they were taking that Saturday off as part of the holiday weekend.
But when they didn't contact me this week, I was pissed. I called and left messages on 2 county COVID-19 hotlines, but I managed to find out that I got a Pfizer vaccine and got an appointment to get my second shot on Wednesday at Walgreens.

(20,178 posts)It took a couple of hours, but I got to stay in the air conditioned comfort of my car, drinking coffee and listening to the radio. I found out that they were giving shots today at the county fairgrounds, but when I got there, they weren't doing drive through. It was going to mean standing in line for a couple of hours and my arthritic knees just can't handle it. The funny thing is, they still had the other place set up for giving shots! Why the hell they moved the operations and didn't set up the drive through program is beyond me. So I'll go to Walgreens on Wednesday after work.

(22,250 posts)very organized, just register with the county health dept. I had a confirmation email within 48 hours (and it was New Year's weekend) to let me know I was registered, then in about 2 weeks I got an email with my appointment information. When it was time for my second shot, I was emailed in plenty of time. We got our second shots the night before the Big Freeze started.
Now of course the pharmacies have them as well. At first we went to sites around the county set up by the health department. New sites were added fairly quickly according to need.
At some places, if the staff knew they had product that needed to be used up they would tell the folks in line to call friends & tell them to come get a shot.. I heard more than one story from friends who drove their elder relatives to the site, and ended up getting vaccinated themselves because the stuff had to be used.

(8,445 posts)And I was so excited about finally getting it that I hardly slept at all the night before my appointment. It was pretty much the same with my second shot.
I had a lot of mixed feelings about getting it when I did, even though I was eligible. The mom in me wanted my kids taken care of first. But Governor Polis said that when it was our turn, to get the shot, and not feel guilty about it. Those words helped.
After this week my kids and their spouses will all have at least their first shot. I'm still going to be very worried about the grandchildren.
Congratulations!
I had the same feeling. My kids are both college students, and are aching to get back into the classroom. (BTW, we're all in CO too. The kids go to Metro in Denver.) I desperately want them to get vaccinated, as do they. Soon. Hope.

(32,634 posts)Every morning for weeks I got up at like 5:30 or 6 a.m. and made the rounds of all the appointment websites - pharmacies, hospitals, clinics, what-have-you. Nothing was coming up, every time slot was already taken - ALWAYS. I knew that other people were getting appointments, however I couldn't get in.
I'm 70 years old, retired and 1A eligible, but that didn't matter. Finally by early March the places didn't fill up immediately and eventually I was able to book an appointment. But it took 2 months of stress and frustration before that finally happened.
Other DUers are posting about their trouble booking appointments, and I can fully sympathize. The only hopeful thing I can say is that now in mid-April there's a lot more vaccine available. Some places aren't as strict about the bookings like they were in the beginning. I think some are even taking walk-ins now (no appointment necessary) but that's only in a few instances. By this summer getting vaccinated will be much easier.

(14,888 posts)I might end up crying after 2nd shot's 2 weeks to best immunity.
My mom became a severe asthmatic when I was quite young. Nebulizers (not the inhalers) back then were the size of a medium suitcase. Even then once every 8-15+ years she'd have to go to the ER to get her breathing better again.
Then 9 years ago I ended up with tiny PE's 3 weeks after ankle surgery even with blood thinners - so off to the hospital ER, ICU from the rehab place. Painful, rather terrifying but I didn't totally feel the terror because it was so surreal! Luckily the medicine started working within 15+ mins. Two & half days in ICU, one in the regular hospital, and 6 months on blood thinners - then I was fine.
So I experienced second hand breathing difficulties from a very young age to my own experience decades later. I
I was fine out of the hospital, other than couldn't eat some my favorite foods because of their natural blood thinning abilities.
I was so happy when I could eat yummy garlicky Greek and Italian food, and gloriously (but not hot) herbed and spiced Indian food again.

(8,039 posts)I completely related to Rachel in a big way when she spoke of her experience. I also received the J & J - one and done.
I had NO idea I'd feel almost a high after my shot. It was just such a sense of relief! Today marks my fifth week anniversary. My two best friends who are basically in my "pod" have also reached their dates to be considered safe and last week we all were able to first hug, and then eat and watch one of our T.V. shows we all like together (mask free).

(25,851 posts)I was getting very frustrated at not hearing from the Department of Health here in New Mexico where I registered as soon as I could do so. Then I got the text message saying I could now make an appointment for the shot and gave me the code number I needed.
This state is actually doing an amazing job, probably because it's being handled at the state level, rather than by county or city or individual pharmacy as is the case in so many other places. Which means we have the highest percentage of people fully vaccinated here, 587,476 which is 27.89% of the total population. I happened to get the J&J, one and done, which was nice, although I'd have been happy with any of them.
My 38 year old son who lives in Fairfax VA just texted me a photo of his vaccination certificate. He got his today, and was accommodated despite his young age because he's in grad school and does some teaching. Hooray for him!
Hooray for all of us fully vaccinated or part way there. Given the millions of doses that are being distributed, I think in a couple of months every single person who's willing, will have gotten it. The huge issue remaining will be if too many choose not to get it. And yeah, I do think there are circumstances where you should need to prove vaccination. There needs to be a sensible accommodation for those few people who genuinely cannot get it.

I understand the relief and happiness people feel, but for those of us who were so desperate to be among them, it was kind of frustrating.
But I guess Rachel's show kind of changed my outlook. Right now the concern is trying to convince the people who are hesitant to NOT BE. Also, her story about crying after the shot really struck me.

(10,715 posts)My state opened vaccinations to people working with the public on the 5th. I called and was able to schedule an appointment on the 8th. My worries were about paperwork and actually finding the place in the big hospital building here - instructions were just that it was on the fourth floor.
Turned out they had my insurance information and all that done before I got there, I just had to sign one sheet. And there were big signs and nurses guiding people from the entrance all along the way. Everyone working there seemed happy, and everyone getting vaccinated seemed happy and relieved. I didn't have any idea what to expect, but it was actually really nice, and gives me some hope that we might well have a lot of good days and good times ahead of us.
