Vaccine is piling up in red states, as Republican anti-science threatens national health

As of Thursday, Civiqs showed 41% of Republicans saying that they would definitely not accept a COVID-19 vaccine, while another 10% remain unsure. With the remaining Republicans saying they will accept the vaccine down to just 18%, red states are starting to see a problem that the rest of the nation would love to have—a vaccine surplus. As The New York Times reports, Mississippi alone is now sitting on tens of thousands of doses that they’re having a hard time giving out.

With just 25% of adults vaccinated, Mississippi is lagging well behind most of the nation when it comes to vaccinating its citizens. But that’s not because of a lack of vaccine. The state voted 58% for Donald Trump in 2020. If that number accurately reflects those Mississippians who consider themselves Republicans, that’s 23% of the state either giving a definite “no” to the vaccine. Add in the small percentage of Democrats and independents who are shunning the vaccine, subtract the percentage already vaccinated, and all those doses in Mississippi are rolling around the state, looking for the less than half the population willing to take a jab.

Yesterday I spoke with a 70 year old man who works at a neighborhood grocery store. He’s not a Republican. He told me he wouldn’t be getting the vaccine because he has dealt with thousands of people since the pandemic started. If he hasn’t gotten it by now he’s not going to.

I have another acquaintance, a man in his fifties. He hates Trump. He told me essentially the same thing. He’ll just keep wearing his mask so he won’t get it.

I don’t know what to say to these people.

A golden moment for Biden. Loudly and publicly announce “Not using them? We are taking them back.”

Send it to the states desperate to get them. Do it publicly. So they know. And let them know, it surges again, “‘Yer on ‘yer own!”

The rest of my sibs and older relatives are all

Simple formula for herd immunity:

1 - 1/R- nought

So if 5.0 is thr R-nought

1 minus 1/5

Yields 4/5

Not only Mississippi, but also Georgia, Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas, and Alabama are all under 20% fully vaccinated, while Louisiana, Missouri, and South Carolina are just over 20% fully vaccinated.

It should also be the right of any health care giver to refuse treatment for a Covid-19 infection to anyone who has refused the vaccine for any reason other than expectation of adverse reactions based on solid medical advice. In the case of there being a situation where a care-giving facility is swamped beyond its capacity to treat all who show up requesting treatment, I would have no problem refusing treatment to those who refused vaccination for no good medical reason. "Fox News told me not to get vaccinated," or, maybe, "my Republican Senator or Congressperson told me not to get vaccinated" is not a reason to get preferential treatment. Indeed, it is grounds for a Darwin award with best wishes for any afterlife they might believe in.

Or it could go for the anti-vaxxers.

Did these people refuse other vaccinations? Tetanus, MMR, DPT, Shingles Zoster, HPV?

I mean they had little choice on the first 3, everyone gets those. How did they survive? Or should I ask, WHY DID WE BOTHER?

I think we should tax them. Hard. It's the only thing they understand. Garnishment of wages, $600 a month to pay for a fund for their COVID care, as a group. Because they're more likely to become ill and their cases will be worse.

take them. Lower the number of vaccines distributed to red states according to rate of usage, increase the number of vaccines going to blue states according to the rate of usage.

Don't waste time, money, and energy on those who ignorantly look a gift horse in the mouth.
