A GOP congressman said so many Republican voters now believe in the QAnon conspiracy theory it could

destroy the party

GOP Rep. Peter Meijer has warned that the rise of the QAnon conspiracy theory movement could destroy the Republican Party from within in remarks to CNN.

Meijer is one of few Republicans who've spoken out against the rise of conspiracy-theory-driven beliefs among a swath of the GOP grassroots. He was one of only 10 Republicans in the House who voted to impeach Donald Trump for inciting the Capitol riot on January 6.

"The fact that a significant plurality, if not potentially a majority, of our voters have been deceived into this creation of an alternate reality could very well be an existential threat to the party," Meijer, a freshman congressman from Michigan, told the network.

The QAnon movement emerged from messaging boards 4chan and 8chan, to be adopted and promoted by Trump allies on the far right as it spread through the Republican Party. A Republican congresswoman, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, pushed the conspiracy theory before her election last year though in recent weeks has claimed she does not believe in it.

Republicans probably wouldn't survive as a political party if they weren't able to get a sizable number of people to believe and spout all of the falsehoods they spew for, well, forever, but especially the past 20-30 years.

It's basically the same thing they've been doing since Newt and probably since Reagan. Why so many insist that it's a) something new, and b) not the same MO they've had for decades is beyond my understanding. The only difference is that Trump was more open and overt about it than the GOP really wanted him to be.

People have also been saying for 30 years that the death of the GOP is imminent. I'll believe it when I see it.

and media completely missed it. the biggest political mistake in history

but the dittohead effect is over - limbaugh's liteners on 600 stations couldn't call him so they policed all other blowhards to keep them on the same page - 1500 radio stations selling the same racism and lies. all the GOP (then russian) think tanks had to do was point limbaugh where they wanted him to go. he kept the GOP in line, purged the party of 'mederates' and independent thinkers, and led the attacks on democrats. much of that he didn't need instruction with.

theres no one guy who can replace him and they're all going to go different directions. guys like hannity and calson and levin and beck are all going to be competing and wandering, depending on different feed sources. central messaging - the dittohead effect - is done.

QAnon's conspiracy theory is a rebranded version of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

Quotes from a Sept. 2020 article .... Can you recognize this stuff now? In both current republican political actions and in those shits that stormed the US Capitol or @ the Charlottesville, VA riot you can see anti Semitic crap, transgender "threats", and fear of the "brown people." Qgop

https://www.justsecurity.org/72339/qanon-is-a-nazi-cult-rebranded/

QAnon purveys the fantasy that a secret Satan-worshiping cabal is taking over the world. Its members kidnap white children, keep them in secret prisons run by pedophiles, slaughter, and eat them to gain power from the essence in their blood. The cabal held the American Presidency under the Clintons and Obama, nearly took power again in 2016, and lurks in a “Deep State” financed by Jews, including George Soros, and in Jews who control the media. They want to disarm citizens and defund the police. They promote abortion, transgender rights, and homosexuality. They want open borders so brown illegal aliens can invade America and mongrelize the white race.

QAnon true believers think Donald Trump will rescue America from this Satanic cabal. At the time of “The Storm,” supporters of the cabal will be rounded up and executed.

snip

Many people are perplexed at how any rational person could fall for such an irrational conspiracy theory. But modern social science shows that people in groups don’t always think rationally. They respond to fear and terror. They blame their misfortunes on scapegoats. They support narcissistic demagogues they hope will rescue them.

snip

In July, the Texas Republican party unveiled a new slogan, “We Are the Storm.” Over a dozen Republicans running for Congress have signaled support for the QAnon movement. Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican candidate from Georgia who has endorsed QAnon’s views, is likely to win a seat in Congress. The President praises her as a “future Republican star.” The Trump campaign welcomes QAnon supporters to his rallies. When asked about QAnon on national television, the President replied, “I understand that they like me very much, which I appreciate.”
