Photos: Oakland driver goes over 100 mph in Maserati, collides with freeway underside, CHP says

The California Highway Patrol's Oakland office shared images Monday showing the aftermath of a brief vehicle pursuit after a speeding driver in a Maserati refused to stop for an officer attempting to pull him over, the CHP said.

The 32-year-old male driver on 580 westbound accelerated to over 100 mph and a pursuit ensued, according to CHP.

-----------------

"It was a short-lived pursuit," Officer David Arias, a spokesperson for Oakland CHP, further explained. "He didn't make it far before he exited and as soon as he exited, instead of going straight, he veered left, went off the ramp and then went up the embankment and collided with the underside of the freeway."

The images show a car wedged under the freeway in a place you'd never think would be accessible to a vehicle.

-----------------------

The driver was taken to a local hospital due to a complaint of pain and will be facing charges for reckless evading, CHP said. An investigation is underway.

"It's unbelievable that he didn't die," Arias said. "It's crazy that he lived."

If they were a car of the masses it would be a hell of a ad (like the old Chrysler ad where two Chryslers hit head on but both drivers walked away). I think it was Chrysler, but I might be wrong.

I don't think Maserati would bother of course.

Any car that can go over 100mph on a public road is a deadly threat to all.

I live near a dealer for Maserati, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo... (anything ending in a vowel). The road behind my house sounds like Indy for hours every day. Every little aging boy is out there trying to make the loudest fart sounds with their sabotaged exhaust systems, and the biggest burnouts with their fancy tires.

Cars at least have an ostensible function aside from killing.

I swear, it looks like more like mom's Hyundai, from this angle.

Of course, mom doesn't usually drive 100 mph unless the Rocky Road ice cream is starting to melt.

I did a double take because I didn’t know that Maserati made four-door SUV crossover’s. We were stuck in traffic because of an accident and I was right behind it so I could get a good look at the name on the vehicle.

I suppose that guy chose the right vehicle to have a wreck in.

But if you take a closer look at the first photo, it looks like the right side of the car is the part that got wedged-in. The drivers' side seems to have missed getting crushed. In any case, the driver probably needed to change his shorts ASAP.
