Boehlert: Judge confirms Barr lied...-- will New York Times apologize for spreading that lie?

Judge confirms Barr lied about Mueller report ó will New York Times apologize for spreading that lie?
A media low point

Of course, it wasn't just the Times that fell on its face treating Barr's obfuscation as fact. CNN's Chris Cillizza labeled it, "A credible and well investigated report that [Trump] nor his campaign colluded with the Russians," while NBC's Ken Dilian announced it was a "total exoneration" of Trump.

Journalists who typically demand access to documents when evaluating investigations made sweeping conclusions based on the Barr press release. The "Mueller report is out," CBS News announced, even though nobody at CBS News had read it. Stonewalling Republicans refused to release the Russia investigation findings, but the Washington Post at the time insisted it was Democrats who looked bad because they "boxed themselves in" on the Russia story.

Rather than going with accurate headlines, such as "Trump's Attorney General Claims Mueller Has Cleared the President," newsrooms tossed context aside and embraced GOP-friendly proclamations: "Mueller Finds No Conspiracy" (Washington Post), "Mueller Finds No Trump-Russia Conspiracy" (New York Times)," Mueller Finds No Trump-Russia Conspiracy" (Politico), "Mueller Doesnít Find Trump Campaign Conspired with Russia" (Wall Street Journal), "Mueller Finds No Trump Collusion, Leaves Obstruction Open" (Associated Press).

None of those headlines were accurate, and they did extraordinary damage because they allowed the White House to proclaim victory. "This was an illegal takedown that failed," Trump bragged at the time. "Itís complete exoneration. No collusion."

Beltway journalists failed in so many ways during the Trump years. Itís time for them to acknowledge that.

4. 60 Minutes opened that night with announcement that Mueller EXONERATED Trump.

Scott Pelley was the face reciting CBS Corporation's blatantly corrupt one-sentence lie inserted before moving on to the scheduled first segment.

24. Look no further than the advertisers of these media outlets.

They are also Big Donors to politicians. That is why you get these headlines, propaganda, politicians who vote contrary to their constituents...

There is a lot of money and influence out there that we allow to continue. We get wrapped up in outrage about the symptoms such as these headlines but we donít go after the root causes.

26. Sure. But also look at the media and owners themselves.

And the politicians themselves. Not everything is about money, and the national disruptions and decline that come with far-right governments are bad for profits. But passions for power, ideology, and what form and direction our country should take are every bit as strong.

40. Going after the root cause of all this

Would expose what is really going on. And, that would spell the end of a lot of power in this country. Those holding onto it will allow this entire society to collapse before they will let that power go. Not to mention the misleading going on so that we won't look at who (and what) is really responsible for this bias in our media.

6. As the Germans say: "Im rechten Auge blind"

The Germans get infuriated when their press or their law enforcement goes easy on the radical right, and calls them "im rechten Auge blind," or "blind in their right eye."

The Germans hate it as much as we do, and yet it persists everywhere.

The fairness Doctrine. It wouldn't solve the entire problem because we have such a runaway, but in time it may make some Publishers think before they spread the propaganda.

12. And I understand...

That it's a technicality why the Fairness Doctrine doesn't cover cable news, only the airwaves that were awarded by the FCC. I see no reason that cable shouldn't be covered by such a basic tenant as TRUTH !!

On what planet or country does the "news media" get to lie through its teeth with absolutely no consequences whatsoever??? Surely there are countries out there that we can learn from and model some kind of appropriate legislation.

15. Cable is not a public entity. Also, other nations do not have the potential suicide pact known

as the First Amendment. The US government could try an expropriate the cable and satellite systems, but that would be struck down as an illegal taking.

America is called the grand experiment in democracy. Experiments often end in disaster. I personally think there are too many long-wave flaws in The Constitution for the Union to remain stable for more than 20, 30 years or so going forward. The Electoral College and the very nature of the Senate both invite minority tyranny over the majority. The Retugs have gamed the system of federalism, plus its associated state and local power structures for decades. It is too hard to amend the Constitution now with hyper partisanship at the fore.

17. Tax the Frequencies cable uses for transmission

Cable companies used a lot of frequency space.

They bid on the use of those frequencies which use ground based transmitters to satellites back to other receivers (on more, different freqs) and wifi towers to pump into wired and fiber cable systems to distribute to the public and even the Direct to TV Satellite Receivers such as Dish, etc. When limits expire, slap a big usage tax on them. The U.S. still owns the spectrum overall. It just basically rents "time-shares of frequency" to cable companies.

Lots of money could be made and if the cable companies try to pass on the costs, those can be regulated and/or reduced. That could allow hundreds of smaller over the air stations to benefit.

Without them there would be no Donald Trump, and I mean ever be a Donald Trump. They made that scared, egomaniacal, little man into a falsified New York "success story", and the rest is criminal history. All it takes is dishonest men, and a media that trades in shock and sensationalism. Voila: President Donald Trump.

10. I'm so disgusted with the failure of American journalism.

They are responsible in so many ways for weakening our democracy. I blame the owners of the media corporations. There is no understanding or respect for journalism there, just the desire for profit and social status. I know there are individual journalists who do the best they can, but many of their careers suffer while the lazy bobbing heads and liars get promoted.

14. It was completely obvious at the time that it was poor journalism.

In fact, it didn't rise to the level of "journalism." Much, much more accurate - infinitely more accurate, really - would have been a headline that "White House claims no collusion found" or "Barr claims no collusion found."

SSH would have felt compelled to report that " This proves that The Most Awesomest President Ever is as pure and virtuous as Jesus."

19. Again, I'm going to quibble with Boehlert's assertion of NYT culpability.

Barr came out with his spin summation. There was no access to the redacted Mueller Report at that time.

It wasn't PROVEABLE that his spin was a lie at that point, but many had suspicions. The NYT reported Barr's announcements. IIRC, they also reported that others were skeptical, and that there was no way to know definitively.

What are they supposed to do? Not report what Barr claimed? He's the AG of the US. The Trump Admin knew how responsible journalism works, and they exploited that knowledge multiple times to "spread lies".

22. and I'm going this direction too

My recollection was that there was push back against a Barr 'whitewash' very early on (if not almost immediately). And the idea that the Times (or any major outlet) was not going to report on what Barr put out .... Just nonsense. In any event, Barr's attempt to gut the Mueller report (and democratic rule) was quickly called out. And the fact that certain individuals are perennially butt hurt about the NYT doesn't alter facts.

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/24/us/politics/mueller-trump-obstruction-of-justice.html?searchResultPosition=17

- NYTimes, 03/24/19, - snip - "Then, Attorney General William P. Barr, a political appointee whom Mr. Trump installed less than a month ago and who began reading Mr. Muellerís report on Friday, stepped in. With the concurrence of his deputy, Rod J. Rosenstein, Mr. Barr seized the opportunity to render a judgment ó pronouncing Mr. Trump clear of committing any criminal offense.

The propriety of that move by Mr. Barr ó who had written an unsolicited memo last year arguing that Mr. Mueller ought not be permitted to investigate Mr. Trump for obstruction of justice ó is certain to be a focus of political contention as Congress grapples with what it now knows about the still-secret Mueller report."

- snip - "But in an unusual move Mr. Barr did not explain, Mr. Mueller left that question unresolved, instead stating that ďwhile this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him,Ē according to a brief excerpt from the special counsel report that Mr. Barr quoted. With Mr. Rosensteinís concurrence, Mr. Barr embraced that opening to declare the president broke no law."

33. Mueller also contributed and did a much lesser job than he was hired to do.

Mueller was a life time, strong willed, Republican.......

I am more than positive that Mueller didn't want to be held solely responsible in History, for divulging the truth that could well have taken down forever, the entire Republican Party he had loved and served his entire life.......He very carefully worded every statement in the report, so there was an "out" for Barr and Trump. And Barr took it from there.......

21. Maybe the hype about "freedom of speech" and "freedom of the press" thing has been overstated.

Maybe we should just stick with the purple mountains and the waves of grain. The amber majesty of it all, ya' know.

Maybe we should deal with the terrible burden of guilt every American endures for living in a perfect nation while every where else on earth (except maybe England) they eat dirt and pine for freedom. It's a terrible problem. Haven't you been reading the news? I think maybe this burden has driven about half the country totally freaking bonkers.
