Real Time with Bill Maher continues its 19th season Friday, May 7 (10:00-11:00 p.m. live ET/tape-delayed PT), with a replay at 11:30 p.m., exclusively on HBO.
This week features a one-on-one, in-studio interview with John McWhorter, professor of linguistics at Columbia University, contributing editor at The Atlantic, and author of Nine Nasty Words: English in the Gutter Then, Now, and Forever. You can also find McWhorters commentary on his Substack site, It Bears Mentioning.
This week's in-studio panel discussion will include Rep. Elissa Slotkin, Democratic congresswoman who represents Michigan's 8th district. She served three tours in Iraq as a CIA analyst and has held national security roles under Presidents Bush and Obama; and Rick Wilson, Republican strategist and #1 NYT bestselling author of Running Against the Devil: A Plot to Save America from Trump - and Democrats from Themselves.

(53,921 posts)I have read at least 6 of McWhorter's books. It will be interesting to see him in person.

(204,779 posts)It took me awhile to post this tonight since there was confusion over who were the guests. Originally they had Rob Reiner - definitely worth tuning in for! - but it appears he's been replaced by Rick Wilson, they said Rob Reiner will be rescheduled. It does sound like another good show, but I admit I'm disappointed.
BTW, I heard this interview on The Daily Show and I couldn't wait to post it. This amazing woman has to be one of the most affecting guests I've ever heard!

(53,921 posts)I am really excited. While some of his theories aren't for me, much of what he as written is quite interesting and I really like his books. He has a really good book on the history of the English language which is very informative.
Thanks for the head's up about this (I cross posted in the Language group!) and for the link to the "My name is Selma" link. I will watch it later.
YEA!!!

(204,779 posts)And I found Selma van de Perre's interview incredibly affecting, she really got to me. She's surprised at all the attention over her amazing book - and she's 98 years old, not surprising, but she's very eloquent and obviously English isn't even her first language...

(70,645 posts)his wit and interviewing, has a refreshing European format (multiple guests in a conversation; everybody drinking on air; wacky bits interspersed). Has novel-writing under his belt, is just: Intelligent.

(204,779 posts)There are so many channels these days and I tend to watch the same ones. When I was a little kid, we lived on the side of a mountain and because of that we only got one channel!
