The Denver Broncos' QB says he's been approached by several candidates but he's not ready to risk his reputation by jumping on anyone's bandwagon just yet
Every election year, candidates fight to see who can rack up the most impressive slate of endorsements from their fellow politicians. This year, Republican candidates appear to be competing for the backing of an influential conservative who has nothing to do with politics: Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow. Why would somebody running for president need the support of a football player? Here, a brief guide:
Why is Tebow such a big deal?
He's the most talked-about player in the NFL. His unorthodox throwing motion is as reviled as his running skills are acclaimed, and in the middle of the season, the vocal evangelical Christian reeled off a shocking 7-1 winning streak, propelling the otherwise-underwhelming Broncos into the playoffs. Then, on Sunday, in the NFL's opening round of the playoffs, Tebow threw an 80-yard game-winning touchdown pass against the heavily favored Pittsburgh Steelers. The spotlight will surely remain on Tebow as the Broncos head into their next playoff game against the New England Patriots on Saturday.
and Republicans want his endorsement?
According to Tebow, they do. He recently told the Associated Press that more than one of the contenders has asked for his support. But the candidates appear to be out of luck Tebow's staying on the sidelines. "I think you have to have so much trust in who you support," said Tebow, a pitchman for Nike, Jocky and FRS energy drink, "from product endorsements to endorsing a candidate because if that person or company does something (bad), it reflects on you."

(31,706 posts)So what does Touchdown Jesus get in return for this endorsement? I ride in Air Force One IF the candidate does win? On the other hand, he's got a nice payday coming in from corporate endorsements and they tend to vanish when one gets too controversial. Tebow's smart enough to know there's no "upside" to going political...

(8,556 posts)Don't know the guy, but I think he really is a person of strong faith. That's just my opinion based on what I've scene and what I know about him. While such public displays wouldn't be my style, I recognize that not everybody has my style.
Just because you don't like his public displays of faith doesn't meant that his faith isn't real. It just means you don't like his displays.

(10,921 posts)So glad he was named third string. But...as I watched this kid get decimated by newscasters and even the Bronco,s front office, and saw him hang on and not say a bad word about anyone, my opinion of him changed. I abhor all things religious, especially anything to with christianity, however he stayed true to his beliefs. he is a bigger man than most to have tolerated the criticism he endured.

(14,561 posts)I don't get into what kind of "person" athletes are - for all we know, they are great people or not off the field, and I just don't care much short of someone being a Sandusky.
He is definitely a tough ball player, but he is a poor QB overall, who benefited from a stars aligning type run for his TEAM when he took over.
But, the kid clearly likes the spotlight, and is a willing tool for the right wing to spread their culture war BS into football.
You say he sucks as a QB, and you hate christians.
It is the right wing's gig, and with everyone else, he is one big victim to them.
