Couldn't Stefanik actually lose in 2022

NY lost a district. Her district could either go away completely or go from its current make up of R+8 to around R+2 or even.

Edit - just looked at the NY congressional district map....I think if they combine her district (District 21, R+8) and District 20, D+7 (I actually think it’s more than D+7)....that creates an even district and she loses.

1. It would be hard to eliminate it entirely

It is bordered on the east by Vermont, the west by more rural NY and the north by Canada. So most of the district has to stay but they can go south into more liberal downstate NY.

That’s why I think they will go with your latter point and it will get less Republican and become more of a swing district...

7. NY could use the wheel and spoke gerrymander to get rid of all or nearly all GOP districts

This of NYC as the wheel that gets broken up into slivers that are each over half the voting population of a congressional district. Then extend the slivers out to take in enough people to fill them up. That likely is possible. But for obvious reasons it wouldn't be ideal.

Living on the edge of a district can be a perilous task for an elected official when redistricting arises — a possibility after completion of the 2020 Census.

Until 2012, northern Saratoga County was part of the 20th Congressional District then represented by Kinderhook Republican Chris Gibson. Before that, it was represented by Democrats Scott Murphy and now-U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.
