Rachel is having an extensive report about it and is interviewing the chief engineer, a women who migrated to the country.
That might be my next vehicle when I have to replace mine next year. 0 to 60 in 4.4 seconds, 400 miles range, half a charge recharge in 15 minutes.. insane torque ( like all electrics) , can be used as a backup generator if your house loses power..., etc..
That thing might be a game changer.

(11,949 posts)Still a ways to go because pulling a boat cuts mileage in half.
But I wont be in the truck market for another 6-8 years so I expect they may have one by then.

(11,949 posts)No way in hell that truck pulling a 4,500 pound boat runs for 400 miles on a single charge.
But I think in 6-8 years they will.

(19,187 posts)They showed the prototype EF-150 pulling a 1.2 million lb. train, but they were mum on their mileage.

(257 posts)My 17 Volt is seriously fast, fast enough to get in trouble (so far ok), and I am bummed that they quit making it. Hopefully they learned some things that will assist GM's future efforts...I think over 60 thousand miles I am averaging 56 MPG (quite a few long gas assisted trips)...but in town I rarely fill up the 8.5 gallon tank...PS I know you had the avatar first...

(10,887 posts)400 mile range means a huge battery, which would add a lot to the price. I expect the high end version to be in the $80k+ territory. Hopefully they can do a shorter range version for under $50k.
But we'll know tomorrow when it is revealed

(62,269 posts)But it's going to help Ford develop more electrics. And it will get the job done. Over the lifetime of the vehicle it will probably be cheaper in fuel and maintenance costs.

(7,619 posts)the range for fully loaded, high end gas powered f150 ?
50k seems like a typical well equipped truck, beyond the basic tradesman model but not the fully equipped limited edition or something model.

(19,187 posts)pick up trucks were the cheapest vehicle you could buy. In the late 60s, early 70s you could get a bare bones F-150 for under $2,000.

(11,949 posts)You can get a 5.0 liter or 5.7 liter V8 for the mid 30s. With 4 doors and a decent package.
We need a heavy truck to pull our 4500lb boat. Got a 5.7 liter tundra in 15 for 32k. Today that truck is around 36. A Ford 5.0 liter is even less.
If you want your truck to be outfitted like an Audi with half the fitting quality you can easily spend over 50K. And if you want the big Turbo Diesels which can pull 15,00lbs or more you can reach 70 or 80.
Most of those expensive trucks I see do nothing an Audi would not do! Most have expensive hitches. But what I notice is the hitches are still chrome covered and shiny. Ive got an expensive Reese 4 way hitch on my wifes truck. It rusted to hell because we actually use it several times a month.

What a waste of time and effort. Instead of promoting policies like healthcare for all, we are actively trying to sell certain products. I'm embarrassed for all of us.

(7,619 posts)that vehicle may also appeal to right wingers. They have poopooed evs for years but this looks and performs like a truck , actually outperforms gas models. This may be the push we need for wide adoption.

(4,986 posts)F-150 is by far the best selling vehicle ever made and has been for decades. Sales of it alone out-paces huge multi-billion dollar companies in revenue. That means a boat load of people buy this vehicle, and that fact alone has the potential to change the vehicle manufacturing industry from combustion to electric engines in a very short timeframe, especially if, as was explained, the e-vehicles provide greater value to the customer (for example, astonishing towing capacity and ability to function as a whole-house generator for the home in case of emergency - think Texas electric grid going down, for one, and polar plunges of temperatures over weeks as we had in the upper mid-west this winter, for two). And all that from the electric emergence of this one vehicle will do wonders for the environment in reducing emissions and slowing climate change.

(1,306 posts)It will. Almost half the price for a var that actually feels like a car, and gets comparable mileage.
If I could afford it, I'd be signing the paperwork today. I damn nearly cried when the test drive was over and the dealer rep came to pick up the car.
I had very few complaints... not enough USB ports, cannot cover the glass top, no ac "house" plug (the c-max had one and you have no idea how convenient that is till you've had the option) and the audio system seems to be a step down from the previous generation of vehicles. (Ford switched from Sony to BangOluffson.)

(35,622 posts)Not one person has mentioned that the person heading all this up for Ford is a woman!
An Asian woman, no less.
I was so thrilled to see this that I about cried. First they showed her driving the truck with someone else and I thought hmm well, interesting.
Then Rachel interviewed her and we found out who she was! Heading up engineering for such an important vehicle line is no small thing.
It means a little something extra to me because I was the first woman hired in an executive capacity by one of what was then called The Big Three. This was early 70s and there was a hiring freeze on. As I worked in the capacity of territory manager I saw them slowly add women to the executive ranks.
NJCher
(35,622 posts)That when I first saw her driving the truck, I thought she exuded confidence. An unusual kind of confidence because I could feel her assessing how that truck handled. Well now we know why. She knows that truck down to the last microcircuitry board.
I know this sounds maudlin, but I dont care. His was a special moment.
Rachel did her usual terrific job of setting up the story. Thank you , Rachel.

(51,522 posts)That is why good plug-in hybrid like a RAV4 Prime is garnering $10k above sticker, if you can find one on dealer lots.
EV charging times are still way too long to be practical. I have an electric car (Chevy Bolt) and the range anxiety sucks. I have to rent a gas car every rime I want to go on a road trip, or more than 75 miles from home. After 2 years of this torture, I'm done. I plan to get a RAV4 Prime as my next car....if I can find one.

(2,198 posts)and would absolutely be intrigued if Toyota's Tundra offered a Hybrid Tundra option. My son has a Prius and loves it, not me though....but I would definitely be interested in a Hybrid truck. I'm a couple of years away from a new truck purchase. Top contenders will be a F150 or the Tundra. I've had two Tacomas and they are hard to beat, my intro truck was Nissan King Cab back in the mid 80s. It's time to go full size.Fortunately I can wait a few more years before going full sized...
