McConnell's escape hatch has opened before him. Will he leap through?

As it becomes increasingly apparent what Trump will do to the Republican Party and maybe the country, and as the value of the Party's alignment with Trump becomes increasingly dubious, Mitch knows he has to rid himself of this man, but he must do so without unduly irritating him. How?

Simple: arrange/allow for 10-12 of the Republican Caucus in the Senate to vote for the bipartisan commission on Jan. 6.

He must publicly appear to be against (moderately, not vehemently) the formation of such a commission, but privately give his consent (and maybe encouragement) for the bill.

Then the commission will expose Trump's overt and tacit approval of he insurrection by lowering the threat level, delaying reinforcements, and at least indirect communicating with the mob (likely through Stone and Bannon)

Mitch. This is the way out of your personal and party's dilemma. It is also the way out of the country's nightmare.

Republicans trying to block the formation of a Jan 6th commission are getting their marching orders from #Traitor.

Anyone voting to create such a commission knows they'll have to face a primary challenger personally selected by Dear Leader. Or face eternal rage like Romney.

Oh Collins and Murkowski MIGHT cross over and vote for it, especially since they're safe for another 5 years but there aren't enough Republicans in that sweet spot who can afford to get on #Cult45's bad side

It's all methodical, calculated with precision down to a planck length as to whether it even incrementally moves him toward reclaiming power. Right now, I'd guess allowing the DOJ to do the dirty work is a better "look" for McConnell than allowing a commission to move forward. Hope he surprises.

Do you know realise that it is in the GOP's interest for this deal to go through ? Then they can shit all over it. If this deal fails, Pelosi can toss it in the bin and bring in a far more stringent Commission. The Republicans are going to call in Partisan no matter which one comes into being, so you might as well get all the facts out there.

There's no support in the GOP for Mitch to do what you propose.

They have to know that Trump could not pull off some kind of victory in the next election. He never had over a 42% approval rating the whole time he was in office. Try as they might, the Republicans will not be able to cheat themselves into a win with Trump. The best thing that could happen to Republicans would be if Trump up and croaked, (and the sooner the better) then they could put a different Fascist in place to run in his place. I would rather them run the red-haired clown than some new, more charismatic leader. McConnell knows this, he is evil, but not stupid.

Commission or no commission I think that Trump is history.

That said, I would love to see a bipartisan committee bring him and his partners in crime to justice, but I just don't see it happening. If it does happen it will not influence the Trump Cult as they will continue to deny the facts.
