Guess I wont be visiting Texas again any time soon.
Spent the winter in Texas in 2007-2008. Had a great time. Great BBQ. Even got to attend an Obama rally in San Antonio. And had my first Sonic meal. So good! People are friendly.
Oh well. The state legislatures are really forcing the hands of many of us. I can see over time that those who can afford it will move to states with more favorable, intelligent laws that support the voters and residents. If states want to curtail our rights, and endanger us with lax gun laws while controlling womens rights and limiting voting rights, then so be it. I wont visit there. I do feel for the people who cant afford to migrate to progressive states. Over time, it is going to be more and more critical which state you live in.
We need to do better. But GQPs are just destroying things with no look to the future.

One Texan friend won't, can't? leave bc of her husband's severe health issues.
Another Texan born friend (living elsewhere now) - woman, smart, African-American is definitely not
going back.
And recent acquaintances 2 partnered, or married lesbians moved from Texas (good!) to ?Florida (not so good?)
WHAT were they thinking.
So sad- some beautiful countryside, interesting cities like San Antonio, and Austin... but eeeeeks!

(4,552 posts)That some may not realize.
We shall see how soon the public gun fights begin. Innocent bystanders caught in cross-fire.
Hubbie just told me that even in the wild-west days, some sheriffs used to confiscate a visitors gun when they came to town. It was given back to them when they went on their way.
Cant see that happening here. Even if it does, you cant possibly do that effectively. Gun rights activists wont stand for it when the state has deemed it OK to carry with no restrictions.
Does Texas do background checks consistently?? At all??

(12,647 posts)I suppose their lives and the grief of their loved ones trump the right of some angry, paranoid idiot flipping out because they can't deal with the real world to buy a gun and "make the bastards pay".
Texas will also see an increase in toddlers with access to firearms killing people and of suicides.
But hey Gunz are Gawd's holy gift to White Males, so yay Texas.

(4,552 posts)Well then, better keep this list handy for the day I decide to move from NY state. Maybe I wont. In our state, pot is now legal, women can choose, we finally have improved voting laws, and we arent on that dreaded list. Oh, and although I live in a red area (NY-21), at least my state as a whole is Blue.
Indeed, I 💙 NY.

Dark Blue = Shall issue, permit must be granted except to prohibited persons (such as felons).
Light Blue = May issue, permit at discretion of local law enforcement, but shall issue in practice.
Yellow = May issue, permit at discretion of local law enforcement.
Red = May issue, but no issue in practice.

(1,789 posts)Road rage incidents, strip club arguments and the like make the San Antonio news frequently as they end in gunfire. Bystanders, including children, get caught in the crossfire. This is not about a good guy with a gun stopping a bad guy with a gun. This is about idiots having a louder, deadlier "fuck you" than the other idiot in the argument at their disposal in emotionally heated instances.
All this is happening among the gun owners with permits to a large degree. Will owners of illegal guns now feel emboldened to carry them openly?
