Southwest Airlines postpones return of alcohol sales after incidents with unruly passengers

Southwest Airlines has ditched its plans to resume alcohol sales in June and July given a spike in in-flight incidents, including a an altercation between a flight attendant and passenger that sent the flight attendant to the hospital Sunday.

"Given the recent uptick in industry-wide incidents of passenger disruptions in-flight, we have made the decision to pause the previously announced restart of alcohol service onboard,'' Southwest spokesman Chris Mainz told USA TODAY. "We realize this decision may be disappointing for some customers, but we feel this is the right decision at this time in the interest of the safety and comfort of all customers and crew on board.''

The airline did not say when it plans to resume alcohol sales. Other airlines have already brought alcohol back to some degree, but not all have. American Airlines is still not serving alcohol in economy.

To passenger cheers, Southwest last week announced the return of alcohol. It planned to resume service on Hawaii flights June 24 and other flights July 14. ...........(more)

Any excuse to get buzzed.

Some people get drunk in the terminal before they get on the plane.
Then they want to buy alcohol when they're flying.

And the rest of us have to put up with them?

I normally have a Bloody Maria at the airport. But none one the plane. It helps me doze off on the flight which is always an overnight flight. But it requires drinking a good bit of water not to get dehydrated.

As I get older the jet lag gets worse. If I don’t get some sleep on the plane I’m shot my first day there. And sleeping on the plane is difficult for me. Can’t afford 1st class. Last 2 times we went we actually paid for a night the evening we flew so we could check in by 9:00am and nap till noon or so. If not check is not till 3:00 or 4 and I can’t make it.

I’m just happy to afford ‘fancy pants’ coach with 3 extra inches of legroom!

We flew with another couple who were not experienced international travelers. They took some kind of prescription drugs and it totally backfired on them! The wife and I were able to doze. They stayed wired and were useless the first day there!

And believe me, no one wants to see me in my underwear! Even me. I’m to the point of wanting to turn off the light when I shower!

Have a meaningful Memorial Day weekend.
