We're putting my sweet little girl down today....

Our rescue mutt we got from the shelter for my son when he was little.
She's the sweetest, most loving dog anyone could ask for... Unfortunately, she can no longer stand up and walk on her own without extreme difficulty.
The day she came home, she attached herself to me since, I suppose, I'm the "alpha male" of the household. She followed me everywhere all the time. We taught her tricks. She used to love diving in the pool and chasing a tennis ball at the dog park. Watching her decline over the last few months has been heart breaking. I can't stand the thought of letting her go.

I'm off to the store right now to buy her a filet mignon and some bacon. I will sadly cook her last meal with that. Angel care will be here tonight to administer her peaceful demise. Some "Fathers Day".....

I'm a big strong ex-hockey player who can't see through the tears right now. This life sucks.

I have my little Chasie's ashes in a tiny casket on the mantel with a picture of him smiling and his green harness. We let him go in Dec2019 and I miss him to this day. Still call my new little guy Chai "Chase" from time to time.

Seeing through the tears when saying goodbye is nearly impossible. I have held my friends in my arms as they leave. The grief is not bearable. Two things are so hard that I often wonder how I managed. The drive home is not definable, the loss is total. The other is what I call trapped grief. It is inside and it won’t go anywhere. The feeling is hopelessness. It is hard yet I keep doing it. I now have two more precious souls that bring me joy.

I wish you comfort on this most difficult journey.

Been there, done that. It does indeed suck. Worse part of having a furry buddy. Never gets easier no matter how many critters you've had.

On the other hand, no one wants to see a beloved animal suffer, so you must know you're doing the right thing.

The timing (Father's Day) however couldn't get much worse. But again, you get to treat her with a special meal with lots and hugs and kisses.

Save these messages to read again later. They will each carry different meaning as time goes on.

We lost our sweet black lab 5 years ago. I can still smell her fur. And hear her sweet little whines when she wanted attention.

The rainbow bridge takes her to a painless, fun, sunny place with all her friends she met in her lifetime. Treats to eat, animals to chase, grass to rest in, water to splash thru.

I still tear up thinking of our sweet Necee, but the feelings aren’t as painful now. It takes time.

It’s better to have adopted and lost, than never to have adopted at all. You know unconditional love and that will be with you forever.

Peace

63. When you give your heart to a dog
Sun Jun 20, 2021, 05:58 PM
Jun 2021

The Power of the Dog
Rudyard Kipling - 1865-1936

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie—
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet’s unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find—it’s your own affair—
But… you’ve given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!).
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone—wherever it goes—for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We’ve sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we’ve kept ’em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long—
So why in—Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Wishing her comfort and love, and peace of mind and solace for your broken heart.

Tears heal but they’re also very dehydrating so don’t forget to drink a lot of water. It also helps with the stress, as stress hormones are less concentrated in the body when you are hydrated.

I’ll be thinking of you. Many of us will be. Aloha brother.

There is maybe nothing so painful than losing/ letting your furbabies go. They give so much love and unconditionally. You gave her a great life full of love and she loves you more than anything. This is gift of love you can give her, to release her from suffering. I still miss all of mine and have memorials for them all. We have a ceremony to celebrate their life and I have kept journals addressed to them to help my grief. Hugs to you

We went thru something similar last Dec. Our beautiful, intelligent, sweet-sweet girl, a big yellow Lab, had to be put down due to her failing heart - it was a most serious congential heart valve problem that had never been diagnosed. She was only 5yo!

As with you, it tore our hearts out.

Sending cyber hugs & our deep sympathy. They are truly family members.

P.S. We have a small memorial of framed pictures of her in our bookcase. Perhaps that could help you & your family too.

That doesn't make your grief any easier, and I'm so sorry. I hope you find peace and comfort in the knowledge that not only did you love her, but she loved you - especially for that final act of putting her needs above yours today.

It's been 3 years, and I still have tears for our dog-of-a-lifetime.
I really mean it when I say that I feel your pain.

so I was her shoulder.

So sorry you're losing your fur bud.

Though President Biden was talking about people I applied I think...
In time the smiles will come before the tears.

We had to put our beloved Kinsey down two years ago. I still am not over it. We are in our seventies, and not getting another dog.

Our son brought us a beautiful rescue cat. He is smart and friendly. We had our Claudia cat for sixteen years. Toby, our rescue cat, is about four years old.

You will have your pictures and memories. I know it is not enough, but it is something.

the good memories will be crowding out the bad. I am DREADING the day our 13-year old Cairn starts slipping away faster than he already is.

I feel so badly for you and your family.

Losing our four legged friends is as difficult to bear as any loss. I have endured it several times and I still survive. You will also.

I don’t have any pets myself but my best friend has pets that I have made friends with. Over the years I have had several of my furry friends die. Honey Bunny, CoCo and Bagel, the beagles. Doble the doberman. Minnie the rottweiler/doberman mix. Miss Kitty.

Right now she is nursing Nacho who is her 21 year old orange tabby. Nacho has always looked young and healthy until this year. Recently she stopped eating and lost weight. She was down to 3.5 pounds. My friend took her to the vet and she has kidney disease. She had to be hydrated by IV (which she hates) and has to eat kidney disease cat food. Yesterday we sat with her and petted her while she ate. My friend says she seems to eat more when she sits with her and pets her while she eats. She is back up to 6 pounds now but I suspect she won’t be with us much longer.
