It used to be thought that a university campus was a place where youd be exposed to a lot of different ideas, DeSantis said during a bill signing ceremony. Unfortunately, now the norm is, these are more intellectually repressive environments. You have orthodoxies that are promoted, and other viewpoints are shunned or even suppressed.

"Oh, so you mean like in sociology; you have functionalism, symbolic interactionism, and conflict theory; and now they're only teaching one of those things and not even talking about the other two at all?"
"No, not like that."
"Oh! So in studies of evolution, you mean they're only teaching gradualism OR punctuated equilibrium and not having discussions of both, while they both have merit?"
"Uh... no, we're not talking about that."
"OH! You mean they're stifling the "is the universe explained by quantum mechanics or general relativity" debate in physics and have come down on the side of one and are refusing to talk about the other at all? Those jerks!"
"... no, no."
"OK, so in the college restrooms, they have now cruelly decided to put all the toilet paper under instead of over? Those totalitarians!"
"No!"
"Oh... so by 'different ideas', you mean...

(101,266 posts)so pretty much all intellectual credibility is lost by being a Republican these days.
As the Lawyers, Guns and Money blog says in reply to this poor tweet by Nate Silver:

"I also wonder if there are some tipping points. Institutions like academia have strong traditions of open debate, which helps them to be self-critical. But if you go from e.g. 80% of members preferring one political party to 95%, those traditions may get swamped by partisanship."
This is like complaining that not enough novels are written by people who really hate novels.
And there are of course enormous numbers of people in academia who have no particular fondness for the Democratic party, but who will support it because it isnt, unlike the other offering on our two-item political buffet, actively committed to trying to destroy the institutions to which they have dedicated their professional lives.
Being a supporter of a rabidly anti-intellectual authoritarian cult (newsflash Nate: thats a literal description of the Republican party in America in 2021) does in fact disqualify you from contributing to any legitimate intellectual enterprise, to the extent that your allegiance will interfere with contributing to that enterprise, which will be pretty much every day in one way or another.
