Derek Chauvin's Sentencing Hearing Thread

Here are two different ways to stream starting at 1:15 CST.

https://www.startribune.com/watch-live-derek-chauvin-sentencing-at-1-30-p-m-friday/600071535/

My bet is 22.5 years. That is fair, it will give him a lot of time to think about things.

1. CNN. Here's how it will go:

The sentencing is set to take place at 1:30 p.m. CT at the Hennepin County Government Center. Cahill, who oversaw the trial, will likewise decide the sentence.

Members of Floyd's family will be allowed to deliver victim impact statements, and Chauvin will have an opportunity to speak before he is sentenced.

Since his conviction, Chauvin has been held at Minnesota Correctional Facility-Oak Park Heights, outside of Minneapolis, and was put into a segregated housing unit for his own safety, a prison spokesperson said. The Minnesota Department of Corrections will decide on where Chauvin will serve his time after receiving Cahill's sentencing order, spokeswoman Sarah Fitzgerald told CNN.

Legally, Chauvin could face up to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder, up to 25 years for third-degree murder and up to 10 years for manslaughter. The second-degree murder charge said Chauvin assaulted Floyd with his knee, which unintentionally caused Floyd's death. The third-degree murder charge said Chauvin acted with a "depraved mind," and the manslaughter charge said his "culpable negligence" caused Floyd's death.

15. Unless its a pathetic mea culpa ploy to lessen his sentence

I doubt he's any any more regretful today than the last 9 minutes of Geoege Floyd's precious life, as he knelt there posing like a big game hunter after the kill, with his trophy.

Chauvin can save his self serving statement of 'remorse'

He should live in solitary every day until he dies.

to everyone he has abused over his career.

He had 17 complaints lodged against him before murdering Floyd. He's not a boy scout. I know that it's the job of the defense attorney is to portray him in the best light, but it doesn't make it less than infuriating.

81. He's also up on Federal civil rights charges.

Derek Chauvin, the fired Minneapolis police officer convicted in the death of George Floyd, made his first appearance in federal court Tuesday on civil rights charges. Chauvin was charged with the federal counts in May, several weeks after his conviction in state court on murder and manslaughter charges in the killing that prompted worldwide protests calling for racial justice and police reform.

Chauvin appeared via video conference from Minnesota's maximum-security prison in Oak Park Heights, where he is currently being held as he awaits sentencing on the state charges, before Magistrate Judge Becky Thorson in U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota. Chauvin was represented by attorney Eric Nelson, who also represented Chauvin at his trial in Minneapolis.

The federal indictment accuses Chauvin, along with J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao, the three fired officers who are awaiting trial on state charges of aiding and abetting in Floyd's death, of depriving Floyd of his civil rights under color of law — meaning while acting in their capacity as police officers. The indictment accuses Chauvin of willfully depriving Floyd of his Constitutional rights by pinning Floyd to the ground with a knee on his neck as he was handcuffed and unresisting, resulting in Floyd's death.

Hope this is never over for Chauvin.

88. Also, he has to serve any reminder of his time on parole if/when he does get out.

So, there's that. I wish it would have been longer, too. I'm just glad he's about to live some misery for his actions. Hopefully the Fed charges will keep him behind bars until he's a very old man.

82. Oh, and there will be lawsuits.

He's going to have a hard time affording those vacations by the time he gets out.

83. Cannot stand the experts MSNBC has on

Yeah, “without emotion.” Give me a break, we see young black men getting sentenced to extreme sentence by an emotional judge daily. But now that it’s a white man. We have to “take all of the emotion out of the sentencing.”

Give me a break. Now that it’s a white man he gets emotion free sentencing. Tell that to the hundreds of thousands of black men in prison who got the absolute maximum the law could muster for them.

84. Watch your back, asshole. 15 years, 24/7.

May you live in abject terror and never experience a restful night of sleep.
