Yet another Chauvin thread...

Just did a search on murder sentencing. Several actually. Aside from the known racial and socioeconomic problems, death penalty states, etc. it seems that the mean murder sentence is between 16 and 20 years. The median is in that range, too.

A lot of it depends how you count, and how the charges are brought, and, of course, the jurisdiction. Seems to be a general rule that the lower you are on the social scale, the worse the sentence. No doubt there's a study on that somewhere.

So, Chauvin's sentence is not out of line at all, especially since he was convicted of 2nd and 3rd, not first.

And thanks for doing that research. Even without that background, I didn't think the sentence was out of line, but it's nice to have this validation.

I have felt sad reading some of the posts here from people who were deeply disappointed by the sentence. I know their pain is real, and I get it. But at the same time, I never thought he was going to get the max, so I wasn't at all shocked when he got 22.

There's something to be said, I think, for keeping one's expectations realistic, no matter we may personally think he deserves.

of having to watch his back every single minute because at least half of gen pop is watching him with a chip on their shoulder...or in solitary "for his own protection", having to live with himself, by himself. Sounds about right to me.

1) he’s a cop…entrusted to protect us. If my neighbor asks for advice on stocks/investments for his retirement and I lead him on a road to ruin, no charges will be brought on me (I’m a machinist by trade). But if he asked his CPA things might be different. Point is, he did the exact opposite of what we entrusted/empowered him to do.

2) regardless of problem #1, if I, a machinist, a nameless nobody, killed someone on camera, while looking at the camera, with my hand in my pocket, calm, cool, and detached while the victim was pleading…would you expect me to receive above or below the mean/median sentence? Seems a lot different psychologically than a rage killing or murder for hire or profit. This was a murder for fun. Serial killer stuff.
