General Discussion

100% sober. I just stood there for about 10 seconds on my back deck in awe with my mouth wide open. I couldn't even move. I didn't grab a camera because I didn't want to miss a thing. After about 10-15 seconds it just disappeared, like it came from another dimension or had a cloaking device. I know most of you won't believe me, but people who have had a similar experience will. I know they exist, that wasn't my first or last encounter but it was the most incredible.

(6,280 posts)You say you did not grab a camera because you did not want to miss a thing. That being the case, can you provide the best description you can of the UFO? I am interested and appreciate any further info on your experience. If I were in your shoes I would make the decision to ignore any responses to ridicule. Ignoring them will eliminate or at the least minimize any control over the discussion.

(6,280 posts).... that since you are they only witness to this experience, some might believe you because of their own experiences, or because of their firm belief that extraterrestrials exist and have visited this planet. On the other hand, I'm sure, as evidenced in this thread, you will receive your fair share of ridicule mostly born by many to elevate their own sense superiority. The best advice I can give to anyone in your situation is to forego any curiosity to detail and make it a priority to grab a camera. Skepticism surrounding your experience is expected, and appropriate, but it does not have to take the form of ridicule.

Eko
(7,281 posts)You cant really say it was metal though, you can only say it looked like metal. You can paint something wood with a paint that makes it look like its metal. Some plastics look metal as well. So really you saw something that looked like it might be metal that was disc shaped. I'm not arguing with you that you saw something, I just wonder why you jumped to the conclusion it is a spaceship. You said there is a lot of military near you as well, I grew up in one of the largest military towns in the world as well. What kind of military? Navy, Air Force, Marines, Army? Also, since it was over your trees, how far away were those trees and how high above them was it?
Eko
(7,281 posts)So you are close to camp Pendleton, Marines. Marines have weather balloons. Probably some that are more advanced than we know. Thinking about that what do you think is more possible, that you saw something like an advanced weather balloon or something else from the near military base or a space ship?

(22,100 posts)there will suffice (but they will offer tons of ridiculous explanations for what you saw anyways, of course).
Like someone said in the trend, this is something that if you saw this for yourself, you would believe. These events happen so quickly, that by the time one realizes that they can get their cameras out (or in some cases, cameras weren't so easily available then) and snap pics of.
There are pics by the way, the ones the military released are just a few of the ones I'm sure that they have scores of, tons of, pictures of such things, taken by highly qualified people, e.g., pilots etc.
Silent3
(15,190 posts)...not a brave stand against those bad, bad skeptical meanies.
Either seeing things that aren't there, or badly interpreting something that was "real" to some extent (actually produced light, sound, etc) is something that can happen to any human being, and it doesn't make you stupid or crazy.
What isn't so smart, however, is being adamantly certain of interpretations like alien spacecraft. Direct personal experience is not the be-all and end-all of truth. When you look at the issue on a broader scale, intelligent life visiting us from other planets just doesn't rank as a very plausible explanation, no matter how compelling to oneself one's own experiences feel.
SWBTATTReg
(22,100 posts)something there.
Silent3
(15,190 posts)That's not support for the opinion that it's alien visitors. Unknown means unknown, not fill-in-the-blank with your fantasies in the meantime.
Get over that.
SWBTATTReg
(22,100 posts)an opinion of what it's not. Despite not seeing it, despite hearing eyewitness reports, despite sightings on film no less, you still are in the realm of the ignorant, despite grade A witnesses (some whom are pilots no less, far more qualified than you certainly),
And then there is you, still offering your 'opinion' despite not even there or such. Such 3rd party opinions are not even allowed in a court of law, thank god. If it were up to someone like you, bacteria would still be unknown, and part of fantasy land, numerous species being discovered almost on a daily basis would still be undiscovered due to some arcane rule of yours truly, that nothing exists unless you seen it. Ha ha heh. I laugh.
Silent3
(15,190 posts)It's not personal, anecdotal seeing of things that matters a great deal. It's correlated and systematic observation that leads to deeper truths, and all of those things you speak about like new species be discovered. The scientific process is the difference between actual discoveries and "thar be dragons!".
Whether I've personally seen a thing hasn't got shit to do with it. I've never seen a black hole, yet I think they are almost certainly real. I've never seen the far side of the moon, but I'm pretty sure it's there.
SWBTATTReg
(22,100 posts)is there to refute her story and what she saw? Why? I simply told her to stick to her guns, to stand by her story, which she certainly believes that she saw something and I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt, and believing / supporting her. I certainly didn't bring up aliens or anything of the like.
Don't other DUers deserve this kind of support from other DUers and don't mock, don't make fun of her story instead? I thought DU was better than this. I thought that we all have a safe space to post articles, events, etc. on DU w/o the mocking that goes along w/ this type of reporting that seems to occur w/ these types of stories, believe me, I've seen others mock other DUers when they reported on such things, I don't recall anyone really mocking the pilots when they reported on their encounters, and even filmed them, showed them in action, craft that doesn't even remotely look like anything in our current inventory of military craft, and believe me, I'm no expert on such, but I guarantee you that the pilots encountering these craft are SMEs in ID'ing other craft that they may encounter, a natural part of their jobs flying military craft, and certainly when they encounter something like these craft, they know they are seeing something different.
I tend to believe other DUers that report on something, in a current trend. Usually it's a rehash of other published stories but sometimes we get other stories, other news, that are first hand, and a fellow DUer does deserve our support, not ridicule and mocking, ridiculous explanations like swamp gas, that are often times offered, etc. (don't you think that if it was swamp gas, that they would already know this? The publishers of the stories know this but still went ahead, though that reporting their story was important).
Silent3
(15,190 posts)For something as earth-shattering as real alien visitations to our planet, sincerity isn't enough. Believing in yourself isn't enough. Trusting your own senses isn't warranted.
Yes, you did "simply (tell) her to stick to her guns, to stand by her story", and I still stand by my assertion that that's bad advice. This isn't about personal pride, it's about the nature of reality, and reality doesn't give a damn how certain you are about what you think you've seen. There either are alien visitors to the earth, or there are not.
If what someone believes in is likely to be at odds with reality, then benefit of the doubt is not warranted, and "believing / supporting her" isn't doing anyone a favor. We're talking about adults here, not about children who believe in Santa Claus. Is it true generosity of spirit to actively encourage a responsible adult to indulge in irrational fantasy?
The big picture matters more than personal anecdotes, and the patterns established by personal anecdotes regarding alien visitations are far more in line with what you'd expect from shared delusion than from shared reality.
The word "delusion" might irritate you, and strike you as the thing that demands evidence. Who am I to call someone I don't even know delusional? But if that's your reaction, you're failing to understand how common and normal delusion is among humans. Being a navy pilot or some other type of "serious" and sober-seeming person doesn't change that, as if only crazy, irresponsible folk badly misinterpret personal experiences.
The burden of proof for someone claiming evidence of extraterrestrials, or even ranking extraterrestrials as a high probability while stopping short of a flat-out claim, is far higher than my burden of proof for considering delusion or mistaken interpretation of an experience a far more likely explanation.
SWBTATTReg
(22,100 posts)themselves this right in front of their eyes. Why can't you believe this? Are you so stubborn w/ your friends when they tell you something?
It doesn't really matter what you believe anyways. She'll always have that experience knowing that something is out there, something beyond the pale, something that 90% will never see in their lives, and what you believe won't change a thing. I believe her. Thank god.

That you even bring that idea up shows you've lost any concern about facts or reality.
Besides, I clearly believe in lots of things, with varying degrees of certainty. Some ordinary things, some inspiring things. Is there some special class of objects of belief that you'd like to clearly name that one should believe in simply for the happiness benefit of such beliefs, facts and logic and evidence be damned?
One should not believe something simply for the effect that believing that thing has on you.
Yes, this poster will "always have that experience", and nothing about making an unwarranted commitment to interpret the experience as space aliens causes the experience itself to be gained or lost.
Why would having a particular belief even be a thing to be thankful for? Why is belief gain, and doubt loss?

(10,570 posts)People like to put all sorts of meanings on experiences that dont necessarily match reality. For example one could believe seeing a ghost means there is an afterlife. But life after death doesnt necessarily mean there is a god or anything else.
I lean towards my experiences being caused by stress and or lack of sleep or something I ate. Who knows. I was a sober Mormon kid in college when most of my experiences happened.

(28,117 posts)I'm an atheist who has lived in a "haunted" house. Never saw "Charlie" (the name we gave the phenomena) but he/it did some crazy things.
At first I was quite frightened but then the events became so common that I just started talking to Charlie. All 3 of us in the family experienced events: lights being turned off, loud, unexplained noises, shoes disappearing & turning up in another place, inexplicable shadows. The weirdest was when a dish scrubber stood straight up in the dish drainer in plain sight while we were watching! Hubby is a skeptical scientist yet he could not explain it.
Charlie didn't move with us to our new home & I actually kinda miss his stunts. He seemed to have had a sense of humor. And yes, all of this is weird as heck & I don't think sane ppl would believe me. Besides, there must be some logical explanation for what we saw & heard.

If you can picture 1595...what will you see?...Think about that one...Then think about 500 years in the

Perhaps somewhere out there, there are intelligent life forms...who are 500 years advanced from us...
What would they say, and what would they do with us?....If you cannot imagine that, and the possibilities of that...then what would you say to someone from 1799...Would they believe what was going to be in 1999?...How many would believe...electricity, cars, indoor plumbing, medical advances, killing machines, airplanes, TV., computers...etc...Think about that for a moment...
Then and only then..might you accept that aliens have visited us...Maybe or maybe not...
