In DU's 20-year history... have any couples MET here and subsequently gotten married? That would be interesting if it has. So romantic.
One part of me thinks it might be fun to meet other DUers in person. But then again... another part of me is JUST FINE with things the way they are. (I'm not a big risk taker.)

(1,718 posts)Is it from the other forum/groups? I can't see that happening here with all the hostility.

That was a long time ago, and most of the people from back then have moved on.
Maybe we should have some more?

(7,737 posts)It was wild!
The "night before" meetup was insanity- and I won the prize for being the "oldest" DUer!

(7,737 posts)DU was so much fun back then- it was a wild free for all the first few years!
Michael co-hosted a radio show on Saturdays with Beachbuckeye (I need to look that name up), and DUers would call in while I monitored the live thread-

(7,737 posts)I think many DUers don't realize how long I have been here because of my post count. I was here year 1- Found DU when someone (Skinner and EarlG?) held up that DU banner during Shrub's inauguration-

(30,790 posts)I remember meeting you at a Denver meetup. I love your posts. You are always so sensible and informed. Cheers, friend!

(19,312 posts)many years ago in a locally run coffee shop. He was a college student, and I haven't seen any posts from him in many, many moons.
Other than that, no, because I'm located in a suburban area smack dab in the middle of predominantly 'red' western New York.
There used to be DU meet-ups in some of the larger urban areas, complete with pictures. Ahhhhhh, nostalgia for the "good old days" of the 'Baby Bush' years.

(38,354 posts)I noticed on her computer that she was on the DU site. I asked her about it and she said she was a member but rarely posted. I don't remember her handle and she herself has probably passed on by now.

(186,963 posts)Id say at least 3 maybe more.
Meetups seem to have decreased. I met a lot of DUers at the anti-war march October 26, 2002.
I also had a DUer in my living room during the 2008 campaign. A very nice surprise.

Would i be out of line to invite for a beer?

(60,541 posts)a decade or so ago, met Struggle4progress, ncrainbowgirll, mopinko (during her visit there), quite a few others. Skinner attended one of my garden talks at the DC arb. I've probably met 20-25 DUers over the years. Fun! Hoping to do the same now that we are in western NC (near very blue Asheville)

How are your tomatoes doing this year?

(12,270 posts)...But no, nothing serious. I am "friends" on Facebook with a couple of folks I met through here, but that's about it.
NurseJackie
(42,862 posts)I think that's why I'd never want to attend any sort of meet-up gathering... and that's why I'm vague about my exact location, my exact previous jobs, my husband's job, etc. I won't even share photos of my family because they can be "reverse searched" or people can use facial recognition on Facebook to zero-in on someone's identity.
You just never know if someone is who they say they are. Why take chances? I like most of the folks I interact with on DU... but I'm sure I've made some people angry at me... and I wouldn't be surprised to learn that I had "enemies" or "rivals" who would enjoy getting some sort of personal revenge on me (or just being able to harass me).
But I'm very happy to learn that DU has resulted in long-time friendships and romance for quite a few of you! That's great!

(7,737 posts)I know there is some fruitloop that took my username and posts on some RW forum. Guys an idiot. I ignore him. I assume everyone that has even known me on DU knows that I would never post crap like that!

(7,737 posts)When we went to the march, and DU meetup in Washington- I don't think FB was around. I didn't know anything about social media back then. We met a lot of really cool DUers like Nothingshocksmeanymore! It was so much fun- I hate that others have had bad experiences online here.
That said, someone would have to be pretty bored to stalk me. I guess they could drive by and watch me read a book or something.

(56,840 posts)before the election of Obama. Several of them are no longer on DU or have changed their names on here, so I can't really remember too many of them. I'm horrible at remembering ever changing screen names as well.
I also know of two DUers that are no longer here that met via DU and got married, but then divorced several years later.

(7,737 posts)I hated to see him on the "In Memoriam" page- very sad.
I DO remember a couple of DU partners that met here, and then had very public, very ugly breakups. I also thought those were sad, and all of the people are now off DU.

(70,251 posts)The two of them, and another 4 from DU came to our house.
I also invited him to sit in on sax with my band at a charity fundraiser.
He was a good player!

(70,251 posts)Four musicians in that group.
All 8 of us got along well.
We also went to an anniversary party for another DUer in the suburbs. He & his wife were part of that party at our house.
It was fun.

(70,251 posts)I met several Chicago area DUers over the years. Some are still here & regular posters.
Two, alas, have died. Don & Jason.(NNNOHHLLI & BlueJay)
Jason married a DUer who started a long distance relationship on DU. He moved here from Ohio, I believe.
I'm guessing it's around 20 people.

(7,737 posts)I did not realize Don died also!
I wonder if Prolesunited lurks here? She was incredibly intelligent, and made some great videos-
ProfessorGAC
(70,251 posts)But, I haven't seen her post for years.
Don died about 8 years ago.
I used to have breakfast with him at a cafe near where he lived. (About 25 miles ESE of me.)
Sent him an email about breakfast again, and he replied he wasn't feeling well lately.
Next thing I heard, he had died.
