Supreme Court leaves Arizona voting restrictions in place

The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that a pair of Republican-backed Arizona voting restrictions do not run afoul of federal law, rejecting a Democratic challenge and dealing a blow to voting rights advocates.

The 6-3 decision, which fell along familiar ideological lines, comes as a raft of GOP-crafted voting limits are introduced and passed across the country, with Democrats and civil rights groups turning to courts to argue the new measures threaten to suppress the vote of racial minorities.

One Arizona policy at issue in Thursday’s case requires provisional ballots cast in the wrong precinct to be discarded. The second measure makes it illegal for most third parties to deliver ballots for others, a practice critics refer to as “ballot harvesting.”

1. When these laws backfire and they lose elections because of their votes being suppressed

I hope they remember we did everything we could to fight it. They have made their bed let them lie in it

3. If I was President Biden, I would immediately attack this as a political

decision contrary to our democracy. And say court expansion is sought. Who cares if it is seen as one branch attacking another.

4. Sorry, but I don't see how this is devastating. First, how hard is it to get to the right precinct?

I think Democrats are smart enough to get that right. Those few who can't determine their correct precinct should be able to call local Dem organizations for help.

Nor, do I see it a particular problem to deliver your own ballots, either in person or putting in in the mailbox outside your door.

Now, I don't believe the laws were necessary, but they are not devastating unless we think Democrats are stupid or helpless. Now, if the Supreme Court rules something like you have have a chip implanted to vote, we've got a serious problem. But they aren't going to rule that.

These laws would probably impact an extremely small amount of votes.

7. I'm curious about the precinct rule myself

We didn't use precincts last year. We had voting centers and you could use any location.

I agee. I haven't voted in my precinct in years because I vote by mail. There were a few occasions where I decided to go to a voting center and drop my ballot in the box - in my case city hall.

8. Laws like these have been on the books in many states for years.

I don't think they are necessary or that this case itself is a disaster. But I haven't read the opinion yet, and the real issue is how far the court will go to uphold any and all state regulation of elections, since the Constitution assigns election management primarily to the states. My state, Minnesota, consistently has among the highest voter turnout numbers in the US, and delivering ballots for more than 3 people is prohibited (and it's almost impossible to vote in the wrong precinct). I am much more concerned about what they'll do with more restrictive laws.

9. Agree, what they might do in future is the issue. However, I think they reached a fair decision in

The laws weren't necessary, but these two relatively minor provisions aren't beyond what a state should be able to do regarding local voting laws.

Honestly, I don't want trump Jr "harvesting" ballots. Nor, do I think it is a imposition to go to the right precinct, assuming it is easy to determine the correct precinct. Another good reason to vote early.

At least here, it's pretty much impossible. You have to sign in at the precinct where you live per your address on the voter rolls, and if you don't turn up on the list for that precinct they won't let you in.

correct that it's darn hard to vote at the wrong precinct.

13. Before the past couple cycles you could show up at any precinct and vote

YOu'd just receive a provisional if not at the right precinct.
But we did away with precincts a few years ago and it's all done by voting centers now.

I'm talking suburban Maricopa county though, there could be strange things on the Rez or in some of the other counties that this is more related to - I know there are issues w/ voting on the Navajo and Tohono O'Odham reservations.
