So I have a question for Hobby Lobby ...

What if the US DID act like a Christian nation ... you know, one that attempted to follow the teachings of the guy the dudes at Hobby Lobby profess to believe in?

Hmm ...

The poor would be fed and housed ... children would not go hungry ... the sick would get access to medical care ... the stranger would be welcomed ... people on the margins would be treated with kindness and respect. It's easy to find all that good stuff in the actual teachings of Jesus.

Things Jesus did NOT talk about ... gays ... abortion ... open carry

Not so sure Jesus would be happy with a bunch of really rich white dudes attempting to steal artifacts from another country or deciding for their employees what birth control they could or could not have. Closing on Sundays does NOT make you a Christian.

Whenever I see things like Hobby Lobby's noxious newspaper ad, I come back to this famous piece from John Fugelsang (person voted most likely to have a White Evangelical for lunch):

3. Right

There is that minor detail. The founding fathers were not Christians. They believed (and rightly so) that the state and religion should not go together.

10. Deists were kinda that era's atheists

Deism: Belief in a God who created the world but has since remained indifferent to it.

In other words, if you asked them, "Do you believe in God" they could honestly say, "yes" but it would mean nothing.

12. Last I checked God is all powerful and all knowing.

Why does an all powerful and all knowing divine being have to stick their nose into the creation they have brought about?

Did God forget to do something?
Did God make a mistake?
Does God have doubts?

25. With that kind of thinking

God made sociopaths, narcissists and authoritarian personalities.

Why the fuck did he create such shitty people and trap us on a planet with them among us.

If there is a god he's a sadist and stupid too.

Let's make a beautiful earth and let's see,it needs trauma, abuse and war on it ,oh and let capitalism run rampant..and destroy my creation for pieces of paper or 1's and 0's in a certain order on a computer.

Burns me up to see Jesus defamed by the misrepresentation of the Christian nationalists.

2. Yeah, there seem to be at least 2, and more like several hundred different kinds of 'Christians"

It gets sooo confusing. How does one know what kind of Christianity different people want, or actually, demand. So Christian of them.

8. Which version of Christianity?

Some of our 'Christians' say they want America to be a Christian run country.

Which version of Christianity?

What will they say/do when it is not their version of Christianity in charge?

Many Catholics/Protestants feel that the other is not a true Christian.

Christians in Ireland fought each other using terrorism.

We already have radical Christian terrorists in America.

A theocracy will not change that.

28. Other than some small cults, none of the many denominations...

... insist that their members leave behind families and worldly possessions to follow Jesus, as instructed in the Bible, either.

Hitchens talking about Jesus' command to not plan for tomorrow, among other things:

5. Well for one thing ....

Good luck finding a nativity in Hobby Lobby. Santa everywhere. Finally found some crappy ones relegated to about 3 feet of shelf space back in some corner.

Hobby Lobby does not care about Jesus or Christian anything. Fleecing the faithful. That is all.

6. Now that's interesting.

I haven't been in a Hobby Lobby in well over a decade, and nativities are not things I normally look for anywhere. It might almost be worthwhile going into one next December just to see what they have.

13. My newspaper carried the "Christian Nation" paid advertisement today.

They had plenty of quotes, from scripture, founding fathers, Supreme Court Justices, etc.

I wish someone with the time and energy to lay out a counterpoint to everything Hobby Lobby said in it. I know founding fathers had plenty of concerns about religious sectarianism. I'm tempted but don't currently have time.

If anyone takes that on, please share it here!

I'm going to Google and see what organizations are firmly for separation of Church and State and urge them to take it on. It'll take some digging to fully counter their ad.

I'm a Christian myself, but I am terrified of the direction in which Christian nationalists want to take this country.

Their links with white supremacy and terrorism are ungodly.

30. I did see one brief piece on the founding fathers' quotes today

And of course I don't remember WHERE I saw it, so I can't provide a link.

But the article did say that the folks at Hobby Lobby took the quotes from Washington and Adams out of context. In the case of Adams, he was talking about morals and religion--saying that one or the other would be needed for a successful country. He did not say religion only.

I have noticed with white evangelicals that they tend to take bible verses out of context or invent their own because ... why not? Most white evangelicals don't actually read the bible they claim to believe in. Why not take the founding fathers out of context?

32. I figured.

I remember reading many things to the contrary over the years. The Founding Fathers knew that religious sectarian violence could rip a country apart.

15. Hobby Lobby also funds a "Christain " militia

Called Joel's Army. They believe that Jesus will not come back until all people of all nations accept him as their personal lord & savior. They expect to reach that goal by using violence if they have to.
Hobby Lobby also works their warehouse staff on Sundays.
