This is what happens when states cut public funding of family planning

Iowa abortions climbed 14% in 2020, after jumping 25% the previous year, new state data show
Tony Leys, Des Moines Register

The number of abortions performed in Iowa climbed nearly 14% in 2020, after jumping 25% the previous year, new state data show.

Iowa had seen years of steady declines in abortions before 2019. But that trendline has changed.

The state saw 4,058 abortions performed in 2020, up from 3,566 in 2019 and 2,849 in 2018, the new numbers show.

The new data were shared with legislative staff Thursday by the Iowa Department of Public Health.

The turnaround in abortion numbers came in the wake of Iowa’s 2017 decision to withdraw from a federally funded family planning program, which helped thousands of Iowans gain birth control supplies and information on how to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The program was replaced with a state-run version, which barred Planned Parenthood's participation and has served fewer Iowans.

It also comes amid a series of laws the Legislature and governor approved that attempt to limit abortion in Iowa.

Advocates differ sharply on reasons for the trend

State Sen. Janet Petersen, a Des Moines Democrat, said in an interview that she wasn't surprised to see the abortion rate rise for a second year.

"I once again think that when they take family planning services away from Iowans and expect abortion numbers to drop, they're just kidding themselves," said Petersen, who forwarded the information to the Des Moines Register. The information was included in an email from an Iowa Department of Health legislative liaison, titled "Induced Termination Raw Data."

Petersen is a supporter of abortion rights, and an opponent of state policies that she contends restrict birth control options.

The fault of abortions in this case lies with the flying monkey right.

But the exact opposite thing happened! Rep. Petersen is far more gracious to these nitwits than I would be: "They're kidding themselves." The comments to the article indicate that most of the Des Moines Register readers get it.

.

If you add an additional 10K births each and every year above normal birth/death rates. . .

In 18 years, that will add over $3Billion to the state, local, school and tax demands.

These Fiscal Conservatives will be plotting their own state bankruptcies.

We're just on the other side of the Mississippi River, and we have the least restrictive abortion laws of any midwestern state. Those statistics are just for abortions performed by clinics in Iowa, so the number of Iowans having abortions is probably even higher.

rules by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state. I watched the first season in 2017 and was so disturbed I stopped watching. I mentioned to my wife that in one scene the main character’s wife in the run up to the takeover of society by the religious nuts had to have her husband consent in writing to get her monthly birth control. My wife scoffed at me when I said that I wouldn’t see a law like that enacted in many Republican run states. After running out of thing to watch during the pandemic I resumed watching The Handmaid’s Tale and in a scene one of the Commanders asked one of the Handmaid’s if she knew what the penalty for taking Burt control is and she replies “yes, death by ravaging dogs”. This show is a stark warning of what can easily happen here if the Republican Taliban is not confronted now while we still have a chance to stop them.

by the commanders wife. The whole idea of hers was to live in a society like the old days where she could stay home and have babies. She talked her husband into the idea and they created the party that took over the government and enacted the new laws.

Many years later when she couldn't have kids and had to be one of the ladies watching her husband rape a women to try and give her a kid then blamed it on the women when they didn't, finally finding out it was him he couldn't have kids so they used an employee and forced their handmaid to be with him.

But my point is it was all HER idea in the beginning, a woman's idea!

When she finally gets out to Canada you can tell she wants her independence back and she was thinking what the fu*k did I start?

Makes me think of republican women that go along with so many of the ideas that keep women down.

She started the whole idea of this old fashioned community where wives submitted to their husbands, then your right the men took over from there. But the original idea I believe was hers.

In Season 1 Episode 6, "A Woman's Place," fans finally learned about Serena Joy's past as a religious author and speaker. Before the takeover, Serena Joy published a book called A Woman's Place that described a way of life known as "domestic feminism." According to domestic feminism, women should submit to their "biological destiny" as mothers and child-bearers rather than pursue high-powered jobs or fulfilling carers. At the time, a historically low birth rate was devastating the U.S. population, so Serena's words served as both a solution — her book focused on "fertility as a national resource, reproduction as a moral imperative" — and as a rallying call for religious Americans.

(played by the marvelous Bradley Whitfield) gives Handmaid June a package of BC pills, after they are forced to perform The Ceremony and prove to a doctor that it was consummated. Presumably June knows that the "morning after pill" is a high-dose BCP, so Commander Lawrence was protecting June from him impregnating her.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit they will then try to reverse the 19th Amendment.

Underlying all of the perversion of our sexual natures in the world, Mother Nature is behind all of our bodily urges. And Mother Nature is going to win.

If we are aware that there is a biological imperative, it is easier for some to avoid the pitfalls. Taking away a vital pipeline to education is aiding and abetting unplanned sex, unplanned pregnancies and unplanned families.
