‘It’s time to start blaming the unvaccinated’: Gov. Ivey on rise in COVID-19 cases, low vaccination rate

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — On Thursday, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey addressed concerns about the recent rise in COVID-19 cases in the state and its low vaccination rate.

In the last two weeks, the state has seen over 9,900 cases of COVID-19. In Jefferson County alone, over 1,000 new cases have been reported.

Health officials and the governor herself site the low vaccination rate as a major hurdle in trying to combat the virus and the new, highly contagious Delta variant.

“Let’s be crystal clear about this issue. And media, I want you to start reporting the facts. The new cases of COVID are because of unvaccinated folks. Almost 100% of the new hospitalizations are with unvaccinated folks. And the deaths are certainly occurring with the unvaccinated folks. These folks are choosing a horrible lifestyle of self-inflicted pain,” Gov. Ivey said during an event for Landing in Birmingham Thursday.

When asked how the state can get more shots into the arms of residents, Ivey did not hold back her displeasure with the lack of success previous plans have had.

“I don’t know, you tell me. Folks are supposed to have common sense. But it’s time to start blaming the unvaccinated folks, not the vaccinated folks. It’s the unvaccinated folks that are letting us down,” she said. “I’ve done all I know how to do. I can encourage you to do something but I can’t make you take care of yourself.

She didn't say much about the misinformation when it could have made a difference.

And she cut off federal unemployment in her state in June, so the poorest now have to wade out into the Delta soup and make a living.

It's time to start blaming the people who used the ignorant and easily led as pawns in a political game when millions of lives were at stake.

Is that going to do any good? How about doing something about it-prevent them from attending mass gatherings, and so on. Require vaccines for certain professions.
Countries in Europe are starting to do something about it.

Raise the price of private insurance and raise the deductibles on Medicaid for unvaccinated. Don’t block hospitals from admitting them, just make sure they have file for bankruptcy.
Sounds mean, but it will convince them to get the shot.

Want to go to a movie, on a cruise or any public gathering? Vaccinate.

They can't be forced to vaccinate, but they rest of us shouldn't be forced to accommodate them.

As long as someone doesn’t have any conditions that prevent them from getting vaccinated, insurance companies need to significantly increase the premiums on those people

It is obvious that reasoning on the scientific basis doesn’t work, so maybe hitting them in the pocketbook will

Hunter Biden sold a painting! That should be the priority news on Fox like it would have been a week ago. But suddenly republicans are on the vaccination bandwagon, just because their constituents are dying of misinformation. Seems as though their plans turned on them and now they’ve lost control.

Hmmm…who could have seen that coming?

Maybe Fauci?

She refused lock downs until pressure got too great last spring. She did a 2 week lockdown, bitching the whole time about the economic effects and refusing any enforcement.

Memorial Day weekend she lifted lockdown, citing........get this....the importance of tourist season and that "folks want to go to the beaches".

11 days later the cases started to rise, within weeks the hospitals filled up.

And those tourists? They took suntans and the virus home with them.

Meanwhile, she refused to mandate masks. She said..aloud...".people won't wear them, I can't force them to" Practically telling the trump lovers what they wanted to hear.

2020 saw well over 4,000 deaths, towards the end, cases were rising by 350-400 a DAY.

Since this year.....starting in Jan., Alabama has had 8,000 deaths. Twice as many in 6 months as in all of 2020.

11,000 and rising deaths and STILL no mask mandate.

She's ordered the schools to open. School starts here in 2 weeks.

The only reason Mr. Dixie and I are still ok is we mask and distance even after our vaccines. And only go out for groceries, scurrying home asap, like in some damn apocalyptic novel.

Ounce of prevention….pound of cure.

When you find yourself going against simple basic things you’ve known your whole life, THAT’s when you need to realize something has gone terribly wrong.

You may not be fully IN a cult but you are close. Your contrarianism or rugged individualism has put you somewhere that you can’t see for the trees.

so when Alabama residents begin dying, she can say "I told you so" and "not my fault"

You can be sure absolutely nothing will be done to reduce the Covid case rate unless it involves making life difficult for an unpopular minority group.
