Nuff said. She is indeed the Goat. And Piers Morgan and his ilk on both sides of the pond, yet again demonising the well being choices of young women of colour are demonstrably the Gammon.

(9,975 posts)They spend an hour, on day 1, teaching you when to shut down! When the run goes wrong, trying to save it gets expensive, painful, and dumb, in a quick hurry!

Someone from another sport likened this to having the "yips" in golf (which also happens to pitchers in softball and baseball). That may make it more understandable to a few.

(5,941 posts)GOAT is a term we should be using. It is entirely subjective and ignores the differences in training, coaching, equipment and many other variables across generations of athletes.
More importantly, does it ratchet up the pressure on an athlete to have to bear that title? I know people love the discussion about who is the greatest, but it has to be tough to have to constantly live up to that standard as an athlete.
Mister Ed
(5,924 posts)That's the traditional meaning, as in "scapegoat".
I'm guessing that, more recently, GOAT is short for "greatest of all time"? Maybe so, but it still doesn't sound good.

(864 posts)You do know that she IS the lead star of the gymnastics team? Otherwise, why all the kerfluffle and blaming regarding her decision to not perform?
Deminpenn
(15,265 posts)it exactly that way. That's all.
She is 24 yrs old - still a kid - with the whole world not just watching, but expecting her to win gold and lead the US women't team to a gold medal, too. That's a ton on her shoulders. It would be mentally challenging for anyone.

(9,886 posts)And GOAT to me is a recipe for disaster. Yes, it ratchets up the pressure. As a figure skating fan for 50+ years and a gymnastics fan for almost as many I consider GOAT type praise and hysteria to be the kiss of death. Particularly in the judged sports where there aren't many competitive events. You can be the best quarterback of all time and still make plenty of mistakes in a game, even lose a game or three, there's always the next game. Hell, bad year? Next year. In the judged sports every movement counts. Balance check on beam? Kiss a medal good bye. Once somebody starts being a GOAT, the pressure gets horrible and the crash comes.
My other issue, where are these people's coaches? To me, part of a coach's job is to keep their athlete's head on their shoulders so they can go out there and compete. Not just on the day, but months into the lead-up. I thought this when Osaka quit Wimbledon on Twitter. Is there an adult in the house?

(1,910 posts)One of those situations where you are not part of the conversation but want to go over and blast them. This lady was 2 courts over with an empty court in between. I was picking up balls while hearing her loudly tell the instructor and the other players.
"Did you here that gymnast quit? This generation needs to be told suck it up buttercup". She went on and on until they started playing again.
This 60 something year old affluent white lady, playing tennis at a fancy place mid morning, wants to judge someone like Simone who has overcome so much and accomplished so much. Makes the blood boil.

(6,165 posts)... and enjoying the activities that are life sports.
I have two memories of baseball games one was going to the ballpark as a kid with my dad and grandfather.
And two while in my mid 50's going to a minor league "farm team" game. During that game, players were paid $75.00/ game. Most were college students. They were expected to get out of the dugout and sign autographs for the kids watching from the fence. Tickets were $7.00 or $12.00 to sit behind the dugouts. The 7th inning stretch had two kids teams on the field each team got 3 real outs and the minor league players had their pictures taken with each respective kid who played their position.
It was a fun game to watch and took less time than ones requiring ads between innings.
I'm proud to say that my kids choose to play individual life sports while in school. And now approaching the big 50 are still enjoying their chosen sport.

(16,288 posts)I'm not familiar with that term. What all is included in that?

(6,165 posts)... don't need a team. Although at times you need an opponent i.e. tennis. Individual LIFE sports.
Show me, 70-year-old football teams. Or for that matter basketball teams.
Most public schools spend more on football than all other sports combined.
Coming from snow country we can find skiers in nearly all age groups from 7 to 70. In fact, our local ski hill has a 72-year-old ski patrol member. One just retired after 40 years as a patroller.
Golf and biking are other sports we can see 70+ individuals still involved. In fact, a 74-year-old friend just bought a new bike.

(4,986 posts)"shattered ankle" wasn't reason enough to quit:
My reply:
She didnt quit on her team. She got out so her impending poor performances (per her own assessment) wouldnt drag their score down and take them out of the medals entirely. She got out FOR the team. They went on to take silver, but I guess anything but gold or a shattered ankle isnt good enough for you! Sheesh

Steve Sax Syndrome
Now, imagine having something happen to you that takes away what once came naturally and instead of that something being throwing a ball accurately it involved sprinting down a runway, bouncing off of a springboard, flipping and twisting multiple times in the air and then managing to land without smashing into the ground or worse.
Or flipping in the air off of a 4-inch wide piece of wood elevated above the ground to make potential falls more dangerous, more painful or worse.
Or spinning around on the uneven bars? Or making tumbling passes that launch you 2 to 3 times your physical height and doing the same kind of flips, spins, twirls and landings?
Simone Biles is the greatest gymnast in history and its not really a close call. Her mental toughness to reach the heights she has already spoke of her greatness before this bizarre Olympics started.
I would pay BIG money to watch Piers Morgan or Tucker Carlson even attempt to MOUNT the balance beam. Getting them to severely injure themselves on the apparatus would simply be frosting on the cake...

(2,007 posts)In her sport, getting the "yips" doesn't just mean you give up too many hits/runs and lose the game. Getting the "yips" can mean you land on your neck and leave the event on a stretcher.
Dominique Moceanu (A Karolyi gymnast who was 14 at the 1996 Olypmics) recounts competing with a stress fracture in her tibia and hitting her head on the balance beam:
