In the middle of the article is this interesting bit of information on Brown.
Shontel Brown is now the subject of a Ohio Ethics Commission review for contract steering. As a Cuyahoga County councilwoman, Brown voted for million dollar contracts awarded to companies her boyfriend and campaign donors are connected with.
It is a felony under Ohio law for a public official to secure authorization of any public contract in which the public official, a member of the public officials family, or any of the public officials business associates has an interest.
The case was referred to the Ethics Commission for review by the State Auditors office and Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.

(58,785 posts)These days where public officials and candidates are concerned, the allegation is the crime. What's an inappropriate connection? Our son-in-law's family owns a family bank in Arkansas and active in other businesses, and in various ways are likley to be connected with almost anyone doing anything in that state.

(13,842 posts)Brown is being investigated by the Ohio State Ethics Commission however.
It is interesting also that Brown began running negative ads when she was way behind in the polls last spring.
"Shontel Brown falsely claimed not to be directly running any negative attack ads against Turner in interviews WKYC News Anchor Russ Mitchell did with Brown and Turner. She pointed out how that would be contrary to the upstanding work she does with young people and children. Yet on the very evening the interview aired, attack ads directly sponsored and produced by Brown ran. They were not one of the several negative ads running for her campaign that have been produced by third party PACS.
Browns campaign began resorting to attack ads after polls in April showed her trailing Nina Turner badly by at least 8 points. The race has now tightened up, but Turner is still shown in the lead."

(18,187 posts)The only "news organization" that paid any attention to The Intercept and Walter Bragman's fever dreams about a standard review of allegations possibly leading to a "probe" (after Ohio's SIU already declined to investigate) is the Washington Examiner, and that was probably only because they got to use Hillary Clinton's name as clickbait.

Even the right wing Washington Examiner and the muckraking Walter Bragman are acknowledging that the "story" is only about the possibility of an investigation.
Why do you keep saying that Shontel Brown is being investigated?

(58,785 posts)a duty to take it seriously. Even if those accusations they dismiss almost immediately as unfounded have to get a file to get that far.
These basic realities are something everyone needs to know, both those who insist on only supporting people of good ethical behaviors and those who, for their own reasons, support people famous for routinely campaigning on deceiving voters about goals, dishonest attacks on opponents, and lavish use of other dirty tactics. No matter who we support, or why, we all should know what we're doing.

Whether it goesvanywhere or disappears after the election, it suddenly news & well timed the week before the election.
Unlike Turner's ties to RE donors & Foreign corrupt Mercury PR Lobbyists where there exists a valid list of receipts to prove the uncomfortable ties being sheltered from public view, Republican AG lands the Cleveland Plains Dealer a hit piece to print & sit on right before the election.
Bets it disappears from the RW AG's docket as soon as the election is over.

The Intercept's report was forwarded to the auditor's office, and, according to a June 2 email from a representative of the office's Special Investigations Unit, the matter has now been sent to the Ohio Ethics Commission, the state's official public corruption watchdog, for review.
"The recommendation by the Special Audit Task Force was to refer this matter to the Ohio Ethics Commission for its review and consideration," noted the email. "The Auditor of State strives to make sure all matters are referred to the agency which has jurisdiction. For this reason, the Auditor of State is referring this matter to the above-mentioned agency."

The "reporting" that there may or may not be an unconfirmed "potential ethics probe" comes courtesy of Walter Bragman and The Intercept, rose twitter's iteration of Judicial Watch.
The Intercept had hoped to stoke an investigation with Ohio's Special Order Task Force, but SIU declined to investigate and forwarded the report to the Ohio Ethics Commission for review. At this point what is known is that the Ethics Commission is reviewing a claim made by the Intercept, not that it's investigating Brown.
"The recommendation by the Special Audit Task Force was to refer this matter to the Ohio Ethics Commission for its review and consideration," noted the email. "The Auditor of State strives to make sure all matters are referred to the agency which has jurisdiction. The article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer is not a news story. It's an opinion piece.
Given that the cartoonist conflates "The Intercept's concerns are now the subject of an Ohio Ethics Commission review" with "Shontel Brown is now subject of an Ohio Ethics Commission review", and cites Walter Bragman as his source, he should probably stick to cartooning.

(67,782 posts)....Shontel Brown's opponent(s)
Even the person who "broke" the story a day or two ago, Walker Bragman, has backed off.
The story is presented as though Brown unilaterally gave those contracts to the company that was awarded the contracts.
In fact, the Cuyahoga County Council has eleven members, the votes were UNANIMOUS. Ten other members of the Council voted to award those contracts.
I wish those who want to smear Shontel Brown on this issue would be upfront and provide the complete and accurate truth.
Further, the article (by the way, the Chief editor of cleveland.com is a republican) claims that Shontel Brown began running attack ads when she fell behind. Not true! Her campaign has not run a single attack ad. This is another falsehood in the article.
