Uh Oh! Something very dark is brewing...

Our local grocery chain, HEB (OK, our ONLY grocery chain) has a lot of notices posted all over the store. They say, in essence, that some of our favorite items may not be available as HEB is now concentrating on critical, necessary items. They don't do this for hurricane season. They must be doing it for the Covid19 (Delta) uptick. Corpus Christi is LESS THAN HALF vaccinated due to a plethora of misinformation, conservatism, and way too much religion, and way too little education. I would ask for your thoughts and prayers, but I hate that sort of thing. Send red velvet cake!

3. There definitely will be supply chain disruptions.

Probably by September or October.

24. There already are and have been disruptions

In the supply chains

What to order and make?
Is there enough staff to manufacture it?
Is there enough of what's needed to manufacture what's been ordered?
Who gets shipments when there's not enough supply for the demand?

I work in retail. 100 year old store with very good suppliers and connections in general. Our inventory is way down, selling more, getting less. We got 1/2 of everything we ordered from one supplier. Better than nothing. Assume other stores got 1/2 too. A different supplier might fulfill a complete order and then send nothing to some others. My boss just tried to order 23 items from a company, they can only send 14, so 40% of the items weren't available. Another supplier told him his order, placed in spring and due to be shipped in September might arrive in November or December if we're lucky! But our supplier of army navy stuff told/assured my boss they have 2+ years worth of merchandise in their wearhouse.

And we sell swimsuits, have a good supply, but heard from customers early in the season that some department stores didn't have a good selection or supply because they didn't order enough, anticipated lower demand when demand was very high.

And I've noticed in supermarkets and stores that there's a lot less on the shelves. The thought of continued and further supply issues is very distressing.

5. The "just in time" inventory practice is vulnerable to even minor supply chain disruptions.

In my area, they are currently blaming a shortage of truck drivers.

I think there is also the factor of economic growth among lower income folks that is increasing consumption.

6. At the same time, our HEB took all the 5' marks of the floor last week. I think it's going to ...

... get bad. I've restocked the pantry with dried veg, tinned meats and fish, EU pasta and tomato products, powdered milk, rice, beans etc. An extra 30# of cat chow for the outside cats.

We are prepared to feed a couple of neighbors if they need us to.

7. I have been stocked for a while.

Everything we use.

Spent those government checks on essentials.

We are set.

Also a big vegetable garden.

I am so thankful my Grandparents taught me how to can.

I have two grand children to feed.

We started when Trump became president.

Solar on the roof, solar in the yard.

Plenty water.

If to many people get sick who grow food and work the stores.

Stock up now.

Not trying to scare people but it is not like when my Grandparents were young.

A lot of people lived on farms.

Grew their own food.

Stock up on beans and rice.

8. Supply chain breakdown.

We're going to be seeing that off and on through the rest of the year and probably into next year. Agriculture was hit hard, and manufacturing is just starting to catch up.

9. God help us all

As soon as Delta got a foothold in the U.S. - thanks to that Repug who brought it from London, and then attended some redni=eck festival in Branson, MO (full of unvaccinated, screaming oafs) - it's becoming a new pandemic was only a matter of time.

Now, all we can do is hope and pray - and mask up! (which you already do, like most of us here on DU I'm sure).

10. I decided last week to buy toilet paper every time I go into the store. I really hope we

don't go through the shortages again. I'm still using up some of the stuff I bought that I don't usually buy because there was nothing else on the shelves.

19. Hurricanes do not disrupt global supply chains

But if things are getting that dire in your area, I recommend a good supply of canned foods. Fresh foods are perishable, so if there is a supply chain issue, the best way to ride it out is with non-perishables or cans with a considerable shelf life.

23. I usually don't pay much attention to those "I know a guy.... and a guy he know says..." posts...

So take this for what it's worth.

A friend in a trucker for a huge West-coast grocery chain. He's been warning me for months.... many months.... that the supply chain is strained. He's talked about carrying light loads and even half loads. Empty shelves in stores that never have empty shelves.

Covid ripples are gonna do some baaaad shit to the supply chain.

I'm not advocating hoarding, just saying that if this keeps up, we face shit we haven't in our lifetimes.

so people be hoarding again. I wish they would swing by the local pharmacy to get vaxxed while buying up all the TP, clorox lysol, flour, and meat.
