Reporting from South Carolina.....🏖☀️🌊

On vacation here in North Myrtle Beach. North Myrtle has traditionally been almost all white. It’s just one of those things that’s “understood” I guess.

There don’t appear to be any people of color here. The local TV ads we see for restaurants, home maintenance, auto dealerships, and even personal injury are completely devoid of people of color. I commented on this a few days ago and I’ve seen no change.

No masks. Anywhere. Restaurants, ice cream parlors, grocery stores - none nowhere. My daughter and I went to pick up ice cream the other night and this family was staring at us like we were space aliens.

I’ve taken it upon myself to aerosol spray in the elevators and wipe down the buttons. We are the only ones wearing masks in the elevators. I just pass if someone else is near when I’m about to ride up to our floor.

Hey! We got the place for free!!

My daughter and I vacationed in Nevada about 5 years ago. My grandmother and her siblings were born in a mining town in the central part of the state, and my great-grandmother was buried there, so I wanted to visit this little town. My daughter wanted to spend some time at the hot springs.

We flew into McCarran, immediately picked up a rental car, and headed north. We noticed that there seemed to be no Black people in Nevada, so we started counting. During our 5 day trip all around the state, including our brief stay in Vegas, we saw a grand total of 2 Black people. Maybe we just happened to be in the wrong places at the wrong times.

We're from the deep south and I currently live in New Orleans. I have tons of Black neighbors, Black coworkers and Black friends. It was really weird not seeing Black folks.

I'm white but I don't wanna die of COVID. Also, I feel very uncomfortable in a place with only white people.

Scary and gross.

All-white areas don't get that way by coincidence.

It is sold by the slice in squares.

It is actually Ohio Valley Pizza but many people in that area vacation in Myrtle Beach.

Have fun in spite of idiots.

Brookgreene Gardens to the south of Myrtle Beach is worth a day trip. Very nice, pretty deserted beach section is just across the road.
Myrtle Beach was segregated into the 1960s
Atlantic Beach, just south of North Myrtle Beach, used to be the African American resort area

My husband I just visited Bluffton, SC. For reference, to get to Hilton Head island you drive across a short bridge from Bluffton. We never went to the island, sticking instead with much lower price restaurants, etc. on the mainland. So here's the thing:

Every freaking neighborhood is gated, including middle class neighborhoods. The only exception seems to be poorer communities.

You see the word plantation used in the names of neighborhoods (Rose Hill Plantation Community, Plantation Park), historic sites with tours and inns for travelers and weddings (Tipperary Plantation), golf clubs (the Jack Nicklaus Course is at the Colleton River Plantation), street names (Plantation Park Drive), shopping, restaurants (Plantation Cafe), etc.

I asked my husband's youngest if she had ever seen people of color in her middle-class gated community and she hasn't in the two years they've lived there.

I saw a few people of color in Old Town Bluffton in the coffee shop and there was a big family holding a picnic at a park shelter near the docks.

We also saw a few people of color in Charleston at the City Market. I almost asked a couple whether SC was as creepy for them as it seemed to me, but it's not their job to explain the harsh realities of the world to random white people, so we talked about the horse-drawn carriages and City Market.

My experience in SC was like that of the kid in "Sixth Sense". I saw walking (racist) dead people everywhere but the locals couldn't see them.

I like most of the places to which I've traveled - an admittedly short list. I had a very strong negative reaction to South Carolina.

And while most communities a tourist is going to see are the gated ones off 278?

You do not get to define what we are.

Not at all.
