It's a cult built on selfishness. Their entire core belief is about how everyone should only look out for themselves and that's what they think makes America great. It's made them blind to threats, especially Covid. They don't seem to have the ability to learn from others on something like Covid, even as it approaches their inner circle. Their favorite radio host getting Covid and being close to death doesn't hit close enough to home for them. Neighbors and people in their town getting Covid and dying is not close enough. They can only see the truth when it hits their inner circle/family. They don't believe anything about this threat until it's too late. It's the selfishness they have embraced for decades coming home to roost.

Anything for the greater good or that benefits others outside their family they consider socialism, so it's totally natural that a deadly disease is an individual problem, not a societal one. They can't see beyond their own interests. It's a moral decay that has infected them for a generation and Covid is going to make them pay a heavy toll.

I got the Swine Flu in 2012. I was 39 years old. Not a young dumb kid by any stretch. Up until then, I was not getting the annual flu vaccine, not because I was against vaccines, but because like many others, I felt that I would likely not get infected and if I did, I would usually be able to fight it off after a day or so being sick. Swine Flu kicked my butt hard. I wasn't in any real danger of dying, but I sure wanted to.

Since then, I have gotten a flu shot every year. I will get the COVID-19 Booster if and when needed.

Human beings are actually kind of hardwired to believe that they are the exception. It may have been an evolutionary development that allowed us to hunt dangerous animals despite the obvious danger, so that we could survive. It hasn't been particularly helpful with regards to communicable diseases however.

Add to that the constant propaganda from a certain segment of the political spectrum and media.
